So this weekend I decided to tackle the passenger side axle of my 95 st. Well after a long removal process I got the old one out and got the new one in. I bought a seal from Advance Auto, and it just slipped over the axle shaft and seems to cover the hole where the shaft slips into the transmission. The problem that I am having now is there is a very small leak coming from the transmission where the axle goes in.
Any help on what might be causing this would be much appreciated. Let me know if any extra info would be helpful. |

I believe so, it wouldn't go in any further, and the leak stopped when it went it, I just went back out and there it was leaking again. It had to wait until I got all the bolts in. I am wondering if I maybe damaged the seal inside the transmission that the shaft goes through or if I didn't put on the seal from Advance Auto right.

its possible the new seal isnt aligned correctly, im not sure what to do to fix that. perhaps a large socket could be used to ensure that the seal sits flush. i didnt change the seals when i changed my axles and i havent had an issue with leaks. it really didnt occur to me at the time to change them.

you've got to make sure that the seal has seated all the way around it, just like bitter said. Also you need to check the spring thats inside the seal to make sure that its still in there, otherwise that would also casue leaks.

Lol. So my noobness just showed, I think I put on the seal like it was a dust deflector and not into the transmission hole. I am going to go check that out and see how that goes. I guess a seal would work better if it went into the place it needed to seal. Thanks again guys!!

doh!
make sure you lube the axle and seal with trans fluid so that you dont nic the seal or tear it. -------------------- |

Well I am back, the seal that is in the tranny is torn on the bottom side, and it is really stuck in there. Are there any tricks to getting it out? I broak the old axle getting it out, and I would rather not tear the seal apart trying to get it out.
I hate climbing under the car, I find so many things I need to fix. |

use a big flatblade screwdriver to pry it out. you'll have to pull the axle out to get the seal out.

Thank you Bitter and Hitcachi, I got the seal out and the new one installed. We will see in the morning if there are any more leaks, but I think I got all problems fixed.
Thanks again |
