using this graph from what appears to be a textbook or something, a 2" diameter exhaust is plenty for the amount of horsepower our car has

haha thats the scan I made from the book by Corky Bell....
but a 4-2-1 header with a 2" exhaust would be completely sufficient for any celica

with a 2.5" exhaust you'll be loosing some overall efficiency as if compaired to a 2" exhaust...though you will be loosing power due to your exhaust not because of the header

overall judgement....listen to your friends 2" > 2.5"

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. 2.5" exhaust is a little too big. I know you don't like seeing a small exhaust pipe but still, remember the old saying, "It's not the size that matters. It's the motion of the ocean." LoL. Meaning the flow of the gas pulses and the pressure to keep them in one will make you gain horses. "Exhaust gas does not come out of the engine in one continuous stream. Since exhaust valves open and close, exhaust gas will flow, then stop, and then flow again as the exhaust valve opens. The more cylinders you have, the closer together these pulses run. Keep in mind that for a "pulse" to move, the leading edge must be of a higher pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. The "body" of a pulse is very close to ambient pressure, and the tail end of the pulse is lower than ambient. It is so low, in fact, that it is almost a complete vacuum! The pressure differential is what keeps a pulse moving."

LOL, the thought of putting on a muffler to add horsepower cracks me up. Anyway, 2" would be perfect, given that we don't have the most powerful of engines around, we aren't pushing that much exhaust, with 2.5" you'd have to wonder about a little bit of back pressure which would be bad. Just remember to keep everything "flow flow" and you'll be fine. Recommending a high flow Magnaflow Cat and Muffler. Also if you don't want it too loud you can add a resonator in the line.

2" exhaust system better? Isn't the stock exhaust piping 2.25"? So going smaller is better? Doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah stock is def smaller than 2". However if you drive a GT you could effectively go with a 2.25" if you want a deeper sound. You should talk to a local exhaust shop I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any questions you have if you want a professional opinion.

I run a 2.5" custom exhaust system (over-axle) and surprisingly it improved acceleration, but that's just me smile.gif

Huh? Seriously? Man, I've always thought 2.25. 2 inches sounds real small to me though for an exhaust system. My custom catback is 2.25 though. I don't notice any loss in power.
