Does anybody know how much boost the 5sfe can take. Im am seriously thinking about getting turbo on my car and i dont want to blow it up. How much would be a same daily running. My car has almost 100k on it. would it be wise to put on a turbo without a overhaul on my engine. I dont want to get rid of my engine for a 3sgte, I want to keep my gt a gt. It is a sentimental thing. I just couldnt part with my 5sfe. frown.gif
also i have an automatic, will it be able to handle the extra boost? confused.gif

from what i've heard, boost is not too friendly to the 5sfe... it's just not meant to handle all the pressure... a lot of internals would have to be changed and i don't think it would be highly recommended without alot of work done to the engine

but i'm still a n00b when it comes to this sort of thing... you can try searching this forum for other mention of this performance add-on... i'm sure i've heard mention of it before wink.gif

i have a turboed 5S-FE

its just sitting there not being used now

umm i boosted 9 psi at the highest (if i can remember) that puts about 200hp.

but i had a HKS head gasket for the 3S-GE which lowers the compression on that engine from 12:1 to around 9.1:1

so it helped a lot on the 5S-FE

and about not swapping in a 3S-GTE...its worth it.

i used to think the same way that you did but its not worth dealing with all the problems of turning a N/A car into a turbo car

you would spend about the same cost of a ST185 clip to get the 5S-FE turboed even if you bought separate parts instead of a kit

If you are not satisfy with 5-6psi of boost, I think that you should look for a old 3sgte or 3sge engine and work from there.

Toysport have engines that you can work with.

You can get a 2nd 3SGTE engine and use FWD instead of 4WD. Traction is not a problem unless you go with a turbo upgrade and up the boost alot.

We have 1990 levins here with fwd 3sgte.

I am not sure if the tranny is an mr2 one but I read some way that you can disable the GT4 box from 4wd to FWD.

Good luck

And also, sorry to second post, but honestly boost doesn't hurt the 5sfe too bad. Just don't push it over 230HP....maybe you can go to 250. I wouldn't even consider boosting the 5sfe unless you get a composite metal head gasket. You need this to lower compression and it will make the engine take up to 10psi pretty comfortably.

yeah the 5sfe can take a lot of boost, especially if you upgrade to the newere 98+ forged pistons, and get a different HG.

Rught on Charlie. And that's why it all depends on your situation. You can boost pretty cheaply and get 200...maybe 225 hosies out of 5sfte...without upgrading much besides adding the turbo and then metal head gasket and forged pistons. If you wanna go any higher, it would be cheaper to go with 3sgte.

Well a 3sgte will handle 400hp on stock internals. Try getting a 5s to do that smile.gif

Also if you are going to get a new gearbox, go for one out of an SS2 celica(the one with the 3sge). It has LSD and should handle the power no probs. A mate of mine has done this to his 1990 celica GTR, and it goes well.

Heres his site turbo FWD celica

The 5SFE can take a lot of abuse, the stock rods/crank can handle 400HP.

I was under the impression that the stock 5SFE compression was 9.8:1 =
http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20Inform.../spec_sheet.htm

For a little extra power, you can get away with low boost pressure on the stock motor. Anything above 5 or 6 psi, and you should upgrade to lower compression pistons and a metal head gasket. Raceeng.com has 8.5:1 pistons available for the 5SFE for $400. The HKS head gasket for the 3SGTE (87mm bore) will work on the 5S, as long as your cylinders dont need to be honed out. If you go with low comp pistons, then go with a head gasket that is close to the stock thickness. At that point, you can safely boost until your ECU and Fuel system stop you.

Personally, I'm starting to think the 5SFE and 3SGE engines are capable of the same power levels as the 3SGTE's for the about the same price - or even cheaper as compared to the 3rd gen 3SGTE's.

The SS2 Celica used a newer S54 trans which has a lower final gear ratio and the option for LSD - but LSD was not standard. I have this trans from a 3SGE Curren and its not LSD frown.gif

hey guys/gals I have a 96 celica GT and I have been using the burien turbo kit for about 6-7 months now at 10lbs non-stop. Its been a great product. Only one drawback I have an auto tranny that its showing its abuse with only 82,000 miles.

I will be swapping trannys here next week and converting it to a standard tranny if any of you have any insight problems let me know so I can plan for these upcoming issuses. Thanks.
