I had no idea there was such a thing as a non-interference engine. somebody donated an engine to my auto class that had a timing belt break on it (straight 6 BMW motor). we pulled the engine apart and a couple of the valves were severly bent. surprisingly the pistons and rods were ok though...

Damn Dustin.....I'd be willing to help out if I have a few days off when you do it.
Might just be easiest to yank out the whole engine, then while its out index everything and do the head gasket, timing belt, and any other parts you may want to refurbish while its out. All that would be required would be to lay the whole harness on top of the engine, remove the axles, coolant and p/s lines and then hoist that mofo outta the car once the mounts are unbolted. If all the parts needed were on hand, 2-3 people could get it done within 2 days, easily. Let me know if you'd like a hand, I'll come up if you want. -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |

If you are always close to home, it may not be a big deal, but it's not something I would want to happen on a road trip. You would have to get the car towed, and you probably won't have options like doing it yourself or searching for the best price. I'd replace the water pump at the same time and check the oil seals for leaks. |

It's actually the other way around.
Most 00 ^ are interference. For the most part [there ARE exceptions, such as the 2UZFE I believe is interference] if it has a belt, it's non interference [freewheeling]. If it has a chain, it's interference. Dustin, I MIGHT be able to give you guys a hand if you need it. Dunno.

Yay for me 2... My belt stripped the 23rd. Just yesterday I was able to get a wrench in there. Took me 1 1/2 hours to get it apart, now just waiting for the belt and tensioner.

OK I'm thinking that next weekend (the 28-29th - weather permitting) should be a good time to get this done. Stef and I pulled many of the accessories off the head today and by tomorrow everything should be set for the head to come out.
So if you guys can give me a hand either Saturday or Sunday (or both) this is when I'm gonna need some help. what I'm hoping for is to do the head gasket on Saturday, then finish up the timing belt/water pump on Sunday.
