ok so check this out
iif i were to hook up a 3000 watt mono amp max to a 600 watt sub *its 2 subs* would it damage the subs if i had the gain set at like 25 percent? and would i have to change the wire running from the battery to the amp cause right now i think im using 16 gague wire? is it a must if im not going to have the amp at full blast? -------------------- Is this good enuff 4 ya? :D

you need a lot more info than that... specs on the amp, brand, rated at 1 ohm? 2 ohms? subs... 600 watts rms? peak? , how do you have them wired--->>> very very very very very very important... it can be done easily but a lot more is needed to be known before i can sign off on it
16 gauge MUST BE CHANGED.... NEVER EVER run anything with a higher number than 10 for any amplifier... 3000 watt amp could use as large as 0/1 to be running efficiently This post has been edited by pittfirefighter: Apr 30, 2007 - 11:28 PM -------------------- Breaking Axles...

you didn't answer my most important questions...
that amp is not made to run at one ohm... one ohm stable is garbage... always go up one step from whatever the manufacturer says... so two ohms is the lowest... even at that though it will be pulling a lot of power.... manufacturer are liars....UNLESS its pheonix gold or crossfire or ED don't have a chance to check out the video, are you sure its a 4 ohm load, i am almost sure its not, what are the subs? what is the ohm of each voice coil? how do you have it wired? yes you must up the size of the wire... maybe not 0/1 gauge if you're only running 600 watt subs (rms?) but at least 8... i recommend 4, definitely NOT 16... 16 is more like LED size wire i would definitely re-wire the subs to run at 8 ohms and then you can turn the gain all the way up if you want... but not 100% sure as i don't have all the specs from you yet.... I need to know speakers RMS, voice coil OHM, 1 or 2 voice coils, and amps rating at 1ohm, 2ohm,4ohm, and 8ohm This post has been edited by pittfirefighter: May 1, 2007 - 8:05 PM -------------------- Breaking Axles...

the subs say 4 ohms on them? how many prongs on the subs are there? and hows are the wires run for the subs... do you know the difference between parallel and series?
those subs will be more than fine at 4 ohms or 8 ohms, nothin less than that, and you need at least 8 gauge wire for battery and ground... its about the thickness of your smallest finger, you can crank it all the way up as long as its at 4 or 8 ohms, if you're not sure, check with me about EVERYTHING, just the wiring has everything to do with it -------------------- Breaking Axles...

I run a 600watt RMS amp in my Olds with two Pioneer 12" subs. On the low power RCA outputs and running 50% gain with the head unit doing low pass filter and no preamp on the channels I can make your heart skip beats when I crank it, but I custom built my enclosure.
I use 4GA wire both leads going to the battery posts. I could hardly rattle the car untill i got my grounding problem fixed (I was young and dumb and grounded it on the body). It ended up burning out a alternator and killing a gauge before I finally just ran another wire and fixed it right. Run some good quality wire to the battery posts, and make sure to use good ends, as that will cause problems too if half assed. If you can get a capacitor to help even out the load spikes, and make sure to mount everything securely. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9sOvaqRYB5P/c...h=amp+capacitor Go to Radio Shack or a hardware store or Napa for the ends to connect to the amp and battery, And get some heatshrink tubing to really secure the ends and keep them from degrading over time. |

that actually is not wrong at all, i have posted very few things on these boards that are not true, and when they are, i retract them and edit....now as to the point i was making....
most manuacturers do not post even close to the right specs for the amps.... one ohm stable does not mean it should ever be run at one ohm... and as for the three companies i mentioned... those are by far the best names in the business and give true numbers after testing the equipment myself.... i've been doing this for over 5 years professionally... maybe you could learn a little something there's plenty i don't know but when i post something... i usually have a pretty good grasp on the information This post has been edited by pittfirefighter: May 2, 2007 - 7:47 AM -------------------- Breaking Axles...

well i must say if i am wrong then i am wrong but i have also been doing this for a few years and have been competing in usac with a group of guys for the last few years. i have run every amp i have ever owned at 1 ohm and have never had a problem. but then again i must be wrong. i better call home and let my friends know who own and run a shop they are doing it all wrong.we right now have a dude running 3 memphis mojo 15s each at 1ohm on there own 4KW. its just fine.Kicker, diamond, memphis,IA, each has worked just fine at 1 ohm or below.

Now that the mud has been slung and the e-peens measured, can we get back on topic .
For 3000 watts, I would recommend 4GA wire. 8GA to me still seems a bit weak. I would also recommend rewiring the connections from your alternator to your battery and from the battery to the chassis with better quality wire, probably 4GA as well. If you don't plan on cranking it, then why are you getting such a big system? Planning to enter comps? Just for show? If you run excessive power to subs, you can make the voice coils run hot and this can shorten the life of your subs, more so if you do crank it a lot. Do you already have this 3000 watt amp? It seems like it's a bit excessive for your setup. What is the amp's RMS power rating? And please, unless you are entering competitions, don't try to make your car like the one in the video. I had something like that with dual 15's and 3600 watts in a previous car I used for SPL comps and I downgraded to a single 12 with a PG tantrum 500.2 amp and my sound quality was far superb. Unless you want to be one of those jokers driving down the road trying to shake everyone around you, don't go overboard. Oh, and say hello to all kinds of new rattles in your car. Better get a ton of sound deadening and silicone. -------------------- |

guys sorry for the harsh replies, been a stressful week, to each there own. i would like to know what that amp is fused at. this is better information to jude wire size by, because ti can tell you max amout of current the amp is able to draw.if its true 3kw then i would only use 0 for my wire with and extra battery.

ill tell you guys when i get the amp.
LoLz btw its always better to be overpowered than to be under powered. i have a 250 watt amp right now running the subs and i thought about buying a kicker l7 10 solobaric woofer. but then i thought wtf when i hooked it up, it sounded the same as the two dual's i had in my car, just half the space in my car. what i want is more power. what i plan to do is hook up the 250 watt max amp to the rear speakers "its a 2 channel" and have the 3000 watt amp running the gain at 25 % of the power it really has. by doing that, would that improve the amp's life or am i mistaken? -------------------- Is this good enuff 4 ya? :D

I still think if you plan to run a 3000 watt amp essentially turned down, then why pay the extra for such a big amp? Why not get like a 1200 watt mono or something for less money and run it like it should be run? Are you getting the big amp for a possible upgrade in the future? Is it just for show? More details!
Also consider that to get a 3db gain (twice as loud) with your system, the rule of thumb is double. Double your power, twice as loud. Double your surface area (subs), twice as loud. If you run 2 10's on a 200 watt amp (100 watts each) compared to one sub running 200 watts, they should sound roughly the same, but the Kicker L7's are crazy loud subs. A square 10" i think has close to the same surface area as a round 12" (or so I read). This post has been edited by Sinyk: May 2, 2007 - 1:48 PM -------------------- |

just to smooth things over... all the companies you mentioned are on the same level as the three i said... i wasn't trying to just name only three but rather trying to prove a point like the amp mentioned above (legacy) and such amps as pioneer and kenwood and even some alpine and such are never what they are said to be....
i was not trying to dump on any of your fav's as we all have our own... just warning a fellow enthusiast... the amp is rated at around 800W at 4 ohms and around 400W at 8ohms... just to let ya guys know it should be just fine for both the subs... -------------------- Breaking Axles...
