the 3sge red top beams celica came with what kind of tranny? was it an s54? As far as i know no s54's came stock with LSD and ive been told that the beams motor was mated to an lsd trans. if thats the case then it could not have been an s54. So what was it?

also is the input shaft off the tranny the same as a 3sgte trans (e153/alltrac trans i forgot the code for it) or the same as a 5sfe (s54 trans). i would assume it would have the same spline count on the input shaft thats on the 3sgte trans right?

There's an E-series trans available for the 3SGE with LSD - I think its an E56. Basically just another minor variant of the MR2 / Alltrac trans.

Show's up with that trans code in my EPC, and most of the part numbers (gears, bearings, shafts) are the same as the MR2's E153. Looks like the final gear has a different part number, but I'm not spending any time comparing the 2 ( there are a lot of parts inside the trans)

The only E56 I know of is in the late 88-91 Camry Alltrac...

I know that st202 with superstrut suspension came with the e56 so the beams probably came with it to...
It seems to be the same as a e153 tranny with a fwd change mechanism.

Well, I was wrong! I looked at the EPC again and it is the S54 trans that had the limited slip trans on the SS3 Celica. I checked the differentials part number against toyotaparts.com site and it didn't come up with a match, so it wasn't used in anything in the US.

The E56 was only paired with the super-strut suspension SS2 Celica. Not sure if it had limited slip.

I have this transmission. Still trying to figure out what it is exactly. Got mine from a '98 JDM ST202. Pretty sure that Celica didn't have the Beams engine though. It looks exactly like a MR2 turbo transmission, but with FWD mechanism. It has the LSD, standard from factory. Is that S54 or S56?

Here's an image

i was told that there were no s54's with lsd in it however there was a lsd diff for the s54 which was discontinued and then the diff was used in the mr2 spyder c56 and c52 trans as they share the same diff as the s54.

Straight from the EPC:

IPB Image

My EPC is the 97 JDM edition, so I dont have info beyond 97, also some of the non-english characters dont come through properly, but you can clearly see the S54 and LSD.

Also, the listing for the E series trans is E56 , E154, though the E154 is the ST205 trans I compared a few parts to the SW20's E153 and found only a few similarities, mostly parts like the diff bearings and oil seals I did find another US vehicle with many more matching parts, including the transmission case, cover, and even the 3rd gear - the 90-93 AE95 Corolla! I'm totally confused now.

Anyways, the part number for the S54 LSD assy is 41301-20190. The diff in the E series trans is 41301-2018, and the standard S54 is 41301-32061. Like I said, the LSD diff wasn't available through the local Toyota channels, but if it's price is anything like the MR2 LSD assy, your looking at around $1600 new (part number 41301-17040).

This did get me thinking about something else, maybe one of our European members can take a look into (hint hint). We know there's an E series trans connected to a FWD celica straight from the factory- maybe the axles for this setup will solve the customization issues when doing the E153 swap?

SveNRG, I cant tell for sure, but it looks like a S54 trans in that picture. The housing for the gear shift forks is a bit larger on the E153 trans for example:

If you can find any part numbers on yours, I can check the EPC.

Well, I have a transmission from a Celica st202 SSS, the tranny has bigger axles just like the ones from GT4/alltrac and Mr2-Turbo, and it has lsd and by looking at my 2000 epc it can't be any other transmission than the E56.

I'm trying to fit it into a st182 but have a hard time getting the axles, the plan is to use Mr2-Turbo inner axles and GT4/Alltrac outer axles. Clutch plate and throw-out bearing is also bigger than the ones for st182

evneveik, does that trans have a limited slip differential? I didn't see any mention of it in the EPC.

Yes, it have. But it seems like the EPC have it mixed because everybody I have talked to who have ss suspension have the e56 and also have lsd...

Why would they mount lsd into a "normal" s54 and have a non-lsd in the stronger e56 transmission?

yeah that trans does look like an s54.... r u sure it came with lsd??? it could have been the torsen/helical one that trd had discontinued.

It definetly has an lsd from factory, dont know which type, but I know by how the car drives, given the mileage and condition of the clutch, plus all the threadlock on the bolts i'd say the gearbox had never been taken off since the car left the factory, i'd guess at it being the helical type.
