Transmission fluid goes into the transmission in the engine bay.
The shifter is linked to the transmission by 2 shift linkages.
There is nothing under the shifter base.

Any preferred kits off ebay?

Any to be avoided?

racing_guys have some for $15 plus $13 shipping, but their info is sparse and in poor english.

Please post auction pics of what you have and whether you like or dislike the quality, etc.

I noticed that some say steel and some say aluminum. Assuming the descriptions are remotely accurate, would an aluminum shift rod be a concern(as far as durability)?

I hope this doesn't come across as rude, but there's several examples (linked pics / ebay auctions etc) already in this thread. We have know way of knowing if every-single-unit out there will work. What we do know is that most the ones do (in fact, we theorize that all of them should... we just don't know for sure). Take a look at the examples already given with pictures of units we know work, and compare them to the unit you're interested in purchasing. It's also a good idea to ask the seller about their return policy.

~J~

PS: In the 4th page of this thread is an ebay link I made:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Short-Shift...1QQcmdZViewItem

and has some of the best pictures further down the thread.

Most of the ebay links are dead, I think only the purple ones are active still. Not many people have posted about experience with specific seller/kits, at least not definitively so.

THere is one member who I will pm to ask abut their experience.

Can anyone explain on here how you go about installing the 7th gen short shifter? I was looking at the stock shifter, and couldn't figure out how you replace it. I was going to get this one on Ebay:

The TRD one is a whole assembly, whereas the 7th gen short shifters you see people on here use is just the shifter shaft. Personally, I'll save the $150 dollars and buy the shaft on Ebay for $25. I'll be buying one today or tomorrow, along with the TRD knob, so I'll post pics whenever I get it installed.

hey I'm wanting to do this to my Celica. Quick problem though. i tried to get those instructions but they ended coming up as some weird code on my computer. So I was wondering if there was some other way to do get them?

Oh and wat was that plastic thing you guys are talking about cutting? Most of the pics on this thread are gone as well as the Ebay links..

you have to get like a longer piece of metal to get that on little bar out that goes through the shifter assembly to get the top part of it off.....the short throw shifter should come with an extra pin...i know i sat out there for a good 20 minutes just tryin to get that damn pin out but it does come out and thats how the top part of it comes off

I bought a short shifter off racing_guys on ebay. it works fine. it was incredibly difficult putting it in and and took around 4 hours (partly due to inexperience and two small parts got lost. one was found but the clip connecting the L-shape to the shift linkage wasn't so we put in a small nail and bent it to fit). it feels kinda stiffer but works and it makes a bunch of noise when i shift. like "clunk-clunk" with every shift. lol. I'm just a lil worried about the noise...anyone know wat may be causing it?
