Im planing on servicing the car every 6000 miles, so its now due for an oil change... Fully synthetic oil etc... As im not an experienced gt4 owner,
What else needs changed when i do this??
Does the oil filter need changed etc??

Yes, the oil filter need to come out.
It is at the bottom, front, driver side of the engine block.
6,000 miles is little stretch for turbo engine IMO.
I change oil every 4-6 months. (that would be about 750 miles on my car)
Also cleaning/replace your air filter, rotate tires, check all fluid level (transmission, rear diff, coolant)

oil changes should happend every 3000 miles....or 2500 if you have a turbo..

yeah, oil and filter ever 2500-3000 miles.

Lol... if you want to waste your time and money! With a good filter (Toyota, Purolator, etc.) and good oil, I have not seen any reason to change more often than 5k miles or so. If you race regularly or otherwise treat your car harshly (offroad, very short trips, etc.) then sooner would be a good idea.

The stock turbo is water cooled and doesn't coke the oil like oil cooled turbos...

I'd be happy to see evidence otherwise, but 90k+ miles on a similar turbo motor (my WRX) says 5k-7k between oil changes has no ill effects (no oil burning, perfect compression, turbo still good, etc.).

Every 3000 miles is a little extreme unless your using cheap crap oil, if you buy good quality synthetic oil then every 5-6000 miles is a good guide to go by..otherwise like mentioned your gonna be throwing away your money.

im shocked at how you guys treat your cars! ever look at your oil after 3k miles? the change in color is reason enough to change it. not to mention that even the owners manual states 3k oil changes. especially on a turbo car that sees high oil temps.

every 2500 / 3000 here, depending on how i drive it. oil is an engines blood. i want it using the best at all times. check my levels religiously also.

waste of money IMO, but if somebody wants to prove otherwise (next time you change your oil at 2500/3000 have someone analyze it, they will tell you whether you needed to change it or not.

especially you guys running synthetic, you are just pouring money down the drain.


my audi has been changed every 5k miles , with mobil 1 fully synthetic 0w40. still has like new compression at 140k.

edit: do a quick google search, i found a guy with a bmw who got his oil tested at 15k and it said "suitable for use" and also a guy with a turbo diesel (even harder on oil than gas) at 10k said suitable for use.

the key is the type of oil, dont buy the cheap **** and go for 10k miles, but 99% of the time the interval suggested on the box is not going to do your motor any harm.

i change my oil and filter every 3500 miles. it may be more expensive, and sum may say its illogical, but it'll keep ur engine life a lot healthier. this is for a non turbo car tho.

What oil should you use?? Phoned Toyota and they said they would change the oil and filter for £40/$80. When i asked what oil it was they said semi-synthetic.. I thought you had to use Fully-synthetic. i got 5w/40 in right now

change it yourself. mobil1 10w30 is what most people use on turbo cars.

You don't "have to" use full synthetic.
But dino oil will go bad faster than full synthetic.
I only use full synthetic in my car.

Oh right, cos they reccomended 10w/50 i think.... its cheaper for me to get them to do it... ill give it a shot in the future when i get my garage built!!

Your manual states 5w30 or 10w30 for most normal driving conditions (not too hot, not too cold weather). Heck, check the oil filler cap - it should also have 5w30 written on it. Unless you drive on a racetrack, you will be hurting power and gas mileage by going with an oil that is any thicker.

Go read the manual again. 3k is for "severe conditions" or something similar This follows what I said above. A water cooled turbo doesn't damage your oil much faster than a N/A engine.

The 3 month / 3k miles suggestion comes from Jiffy Lube and other places that make money when you come in for an oil change. Car manufacturer suggestions are much longer.

BTW, I have about 4k miles on my current oil change on my 3s-gte and the oil is a golden and down about 1/4 quart. This is with a small oil leak. I don't see a reason to change the oil yet. I do have a Fumoto oil valve if I want to check the quality of the oil though!

u guys are crazy, waste of money or not, i change mine every 3 months or so, about every 800miles since the car is in the garage most of the time for days on end, i try to use the other cars whenever they are available to me....

Well you learn something new every day....
I was under the impression Toyota recommended 5k oil changes for regular engines and 2.5k changes for turbo engines.
But I decided to check to be sure.

For rough conditions [towing, dusty, extensive idling, ect] the interval is 2.5k [3 months] miles for turbo engines [filter is 5k [6 months] miles, so every 2 oil changes] and 3.75k [6 months] for regular engines, with the filter changed every time.

For regular conditions [applies to most of us] the turbo engines are actually 5k [6 months] miles, with filter changes every 10k [12 months] miles.
Regular engines are 7.5k [12 months] miles for oil and filter changes.

And that is on dino [regular, non synthetic] oil.

So, corporate Toyota, that stresses reliability, is comfortable changing oil at some pretty extended intervals.....

Personally, I was changing mine every 3 months, 3k miles with Mobil 1.
But recently [nothing to do with this thread] I've started thinking about getting it tested first.....

In the Marine Corps [and the other services] oil isn't changed on a time or mileage interval, it's sent to be tested, and changed when it's worn out, or too full of contaminates.

That includes the turbine engines in tanks, planes and helicopters.
If you think your turbo engine runs hot, runs hard, or runs in rough conditions, think again. You don't have ****e on those engines.
They do run a very high quality synthetic oil in them though, not regular oil.

Thank you for checking on this. I wouldn't call 5k miles an extended interval though! Remember, BMW and Audi now recommend 15k oil changes for their new cars, even turbo cars (with synthetic though!).

I do about 70% highway driving (20 to 50 mile trips, mostly) and change my oil with Mobil 1 and a new stock filter every 5-7k, which is right in line with manufacturer recommendations.

Often people do oil tests on race motors just to check if there is bearing damage or too much blow-by (metals in the oil or fuel in the oil, etc). Any idea how much the tests cost? I've been curious for a while on my motors...

I don't know how much yet, I'll probably check into it one of these days.
I just have too much crap going on right now.

One note on BMW and Audi.
BMW at least has larger oil pans that normal.
More oil means less stress on the individual molecules.
