Hey guys, I got tired of my worn out looking shift knob. I had replaced it with a TRD on, and after I did that, I tried cutting the leather off to see what was underneath. Sure enough, the leather shift knob has the black non-leather shift knob underneath. All I did was cut the seams carefully, then peel it off where it was glued to it. There was quite a bit of glue residue, so I boiled it for about a minute, and then used a kitchen scouring pad with some "goo gone" (sold at Wal Mart and Home Depot) to clean it off. Now I've got a shift knob that won't wear out like the leather one did. Now I have to wonder if it's the same thing for the steering wheel... Anyone know?

I do know that on some door cards the fabric is stuck onto the vinyl card. Not all, but some. In theory with some care, one could remove the fabric to reveal the vinyl but in practice I suspect it won't be possible to get the fabric off without damaging the vinyl underneath.

Yep, this has been around for awhile. There is a leather wrap around the knob from the factory, underneath it is smooth rubber.

The same goes for the steering wheel as well. It is a dark gray color.

At least this is how it was in my Supra.

Sorry guys, I tried taking pics with my cell phone (friggin' vista won't support my canon elph 2.0 megapixel because it's too old...), and they're too grainy. I have to say, a picture isn't going to show you much. It's just a black rubber shift knob underneath, complete with the engraved numerical shift pattern. The way I cleaned it off, there are no scuffs, and it looks clean. If your leather wrapped shift knob looks like crap, just do this, because it will look 100 times better and it'll only take you a half hour of scrubbing at the most. You'll need something sharp to clean the glue out of the numbers on top of the shift knob. Good luck, and someone else please post a pic to satisfy the demand if you can...

I did it. It doesnt look bad at all. But since I live in MN its going to get cold as hell. Not as cold as a metal one though.

As someone said, this is also true for door panels with cloth inserts. Mine were getting faded and gross so we pulled the cloth off and what do ya know, a brand-new looking vinyl door insert! I love toyota

Oh, and MR2's are like that with the shift knobs too
