hey guys, aight I have got a '97 GT with the 5sfe
And on a chance occasion, i scored a JDM 3rd gen 3S-GE for under $200 Supposedly the engine was in a car and running as of last year. Unless i pull off the head and find something crazy like a blown head gasket or damaged rings ..right now ill assume it runs great. So im going to do swap without a front clip, im a starving college kid, i dont mind scrambling for the ST202 parts i need. The engine has manifolds, alternator, injectors, ALL sensors, and a full UNCUT wire harness w/ fuse block so Since the car is LHD, will the harness need to be lengthened? Im getting a euro spec st202 guage cluster, could i potentially just use a 3SGE ECU out of an mr2? Suggestions for mods? thnks This post has been edited by crandsberry: Jan 30, 2008 - 11:42 PM -------------------- OBD-II makes me a sad panda

aww well if i cant bring the the P/S pump over from the 5sfe, find the JDM pump is going to be a major pain
The other issue ive got is handling VA emissions 96+ vehicles are subjected to an OBD2 electronic emissions check. That means the 5sfe ECU has to stay in the car, and run the new 3S motor. This is REALLY important regarding all this research, if anyone could help me on this.. WERE THERE ANY ENGINE OR ELECTRICAL CHANGES BETWEEN 1995 AND 1997 TO THE GT ???? thanks for yalls input thus far, ill be throwing up pictures eventually -------------------- OBD-II makes me a sad panda

Aight you can ignore my previous question. The obvious difference is the advent of the OBD2 electonics toward the end of the 1996 model year. I just found out my car its the california spec model, which makes the swap even more obnoxious. If you want to do any kind of jdm motor swap in a 1996+ car, and are unfortunate enough to live in a state with emissions testing. You have to run the motor with your original ECU , and you must convince it that all the smog devices are present and accounted for. This is what you are up against: Two catylitic converters, and at least two O2 sensors (each one generating its own voltage signal, and they cannot show the same values) The EGR valve, which is not present on any jdm motor. The ecu acuates it by sending short pulses to a solonoid, then verifies it opens with another trigger, then verifies again that gas is flowing by way of another temp sensor at the mouth of the opening in the intake manifold. Even if you manage to bypass all that, the ecu then pulls ignition timing and adds fuel whenever it 'opens ' the valve. The EVAP system, which just requires the charcoal canister and another non-existent vacuum port on your jdm intake manifold. Not mention the ecu logs data and keeps track of anytime your sensors go out of wack. ..craziness -------------------- OBD-II makes me a sad panda

I have a couple 3SGE ECUs, I should have one here that will work for you.
As for the wiring, it will need to be reconfigured to fit your chassis. People have done it on their own before, and of course you can always send it to me, though I doubt you'll want to do that -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

Haha yea Doc, you kno my saga already.
Ill give you a shout when im ready to take one of those ecu's off your hands Well there is good news! Emissions testing is only once every two years and its only in northern va. I wont be in north va in two years! I'll be living out in the boonies, so i can just re-register the car. This means the celi is getting the full treatment this summer, or so i hope: Stripping the engine bay, 5SFE with harness and ecu are coming out, possibly to be sold. Repairing some corrosion under the battery tray, maybe respraying the entire bay. Making a new harness from the 3S and one from a 98 gt, then a major wire tuck through the fenders, and battery relocated. Engine goes in with a SS-II ecu i hope, and then a full custom header-back exhaust. -------------------- OBD-II makes me a sad panda

The power steering pump on the 3SGE is the same as the 3SGTE - 2nd or 3rd gen - it doesn't matter. Not sure about the 5SFE pump, but I'd guess they are the same.
I have a fair amount of 3rd gen 3SGE parts lying around from my swaps, so if you need anything let me know. -------------------- Scott
