after you guys install new headers do you re-install your heatshield? or do you just wrap the pipes, or both?

i would probably go heat shield and wraps if not just for the fact to make it look stock.

you wont be able to fit the stock heat shield back on... easily.
Wrapping them is the way to go : )

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to fit the heat shield back on as for daily-driving protection and for shows take it off and show them pipes.

So, did the girlfriend get some major brownie-points for this buy?

Nice job on the install. I also saw this on E-Bay.
I'm interested in one but do you know if this is smog legal? I live in a state that requires emissions check.
I see the header has ports for O2 but is there not a pre-cat on the OEM manifold?!

Thanks

Yes, you are right, so I'll reword my question to k-weaver.

Does your Toy pass emmisions? I see there are ports for the O2 & EGR.
My concern is that the pre-cat is removed with the stock ex manifold, therefore would not pass emmisions?!
Any comments or does any body else have a 5sfe w/headers and know about emmisions?

My 4Runner has headers and it passes, but it doesn't have a pre-cat.

smile.gif I ordered one of these Ebay headers and it has been received. Due to my perfectionist nature, I had PMed a few of the people that have installed this header (including k weaver) b/c I was worried that the bolt holes on the header looked off, and not centered with the surrounding metal design. So, although I have not installed it yet, I have concluded that I should not worry. So I spent a couple hours under the hood, and found the manifold studs anchored to the block are 10 mm wide, while the holes that the studs go through on the header are like 14 mm! That should definitely leave some tolerance if your holes look like they off kilter when you receive your header.

Also, in reference to the first big, O2 sensor, with the oval shape and attached by the two studs...well the hole on the header is not perfectly center between the two studs that the O2 sensor attaches on. After studying the stock set up, this is how it is anyways...there is about an 1/8" difference from middle of the sensor to one stud, and from the middle of the sensor to the other stud.

These are just some preliminary observations before I actually install this very inexpensive header...but the quality seems to be pretty good. If I run into any other issues or find any other technical info to share, I will do that. And pics to be added once it is installed.

One question: Should I expect any CEL code to be thrown, or will everything be okay as long as both sensors are plugged in?

My impression is that although we are removing the pre-cat, it really only "covers" for the main cat under the car until it warms up and starts doing its job. So without the pre-cat, we are really only throwing unnecessary pollutants out for a little bit of time after starting the car. Let me know if I am off base.

it shouldn't throw a CEL. I have the cali emissions engine and I couldnt get one of the 02's out of the old manifold, so I used the plug (that conveniently came with the header) and screwed it in the hole.

no CEL light for the missing sensor wink.gif

nice set of headerz...jus like the ones i used to have....ur car do get louder, picks up much better and the chrome will start chipping off XD...wrapping it isn't necessary, its really up to u....no codes will b thrown and it won't pass emissions/smog but its pretty easy to take off and put back on(the sensor is a bi*ch to take out and put on). No you dont need to get anything welded but u do need to get some bolts...heat sheild won't fit coz the aftermarket headerz don't have the holes for tht screws to go into...if u wanna c picz check my profile of my baby b4 i got n a accident =(...

edit: forgot to mention after i had cai, headerz, cat bak exhaust my MPG's improved XD...went from 300mi/tank to 380mi/tank...

QUICK TIP.... for anyone else that wants to install a polished header....if you do not use gloves when installing and then start up, your fingerprints will be burned into the header making it look ugly. If you do not have gloves to use, wipe the header down with rubbing alcohol just before startup......

I just bought this header and was told that it takes off the second cat. That's fine but for our cars the garage said it will throw off an immediate check engine light unless you got something that sends a false signal from that sensor. Does this really happen because I'm afraid to install it if I'm not going to pass emissions due to a faulty sensor?

You should be fine. Make sure you install both O2 sensors back onto the header. I've had mine on for a few weeks and no problems yet. But I guess a select few have had issues, if you do a search on here. But you can erase the code later if you get the problem.
