Hey, well when you come down for the SoCal meet, I'll let you drive my car in a parking lot if you want. We will have a lot of experienced drivers there to help you out as well. I should be up there in NorCal for the Crissy Fields Celica meet next month if you still need assistance. I've taught 5 people to drive stick on my car so it's fine. I learned to drive stick in my Celica too. I bought the car without even knowing how to drive stick and forced myself to learn it or else I'd be stuck. From driving an AE86 and a Celica, the celica shifts so much smoother and the clutch feel is a lot better in my celica than any AE86 I've ever driven. An AE86 takes some time to get used to for drift as it doesn't really come with a lot of power, but it depends on your style of drift. If you notice, a lot of the American drivers drift with power, and the Japanese drifters drift with momentum. You can really compare their drifting techniques while watching the professional D1 drivers and the Formula D drivers. Anyways, to get to my point, if you need help, then I will help you out.

Hey man I only live 30 min south from you. If you still don't feel confident, hit me up and I'll teach you (although im sure you wont need my help in the end) like everyone says, once you learn you never forget.

have confidince, you should be good. some of the afore mentioned tips are great. like letting it into gear with no accelerator, just slowly, SLOWLY let of the clutch until you can familurize(spelling?) yourself with the clutches engagement range. then work up from there by balancing a little throttle while releasing clutch. you'll be doing it before you know it!

i hear san fran is full of wonderful hills
so i'll tell you a tip i used when learning to start off while on an incline. ( this helps especially when you have people pulling up too close behind you.)

while stopped on an incline:
1. car in neutral foot on brake,
2. pull up ebrake
3. press down on clutch pedal and put into 1st gear.
4. release (foot) brake (you should be held in place by ebrake.)
5. now try taking off like normal, and when you feel the front wheels trying to pull the car forward (I DO NOT MEAN DRAGGING THE REST OF THE CAR WITH IT!! haha) but to the point where the ebrake is keeping you from going forwards rather than rolling backwards, you can then release it with your free right hand.

i had the 'pushed into the deep end' style of learning
purchased 5speed celica, previous owner was getting paperwork finished. he dropped car off with me while I was at work when he was done. I finished my shift and had to drive it home in rush hour traffic. well i made it home, end of story haha!

in europe only old peope get autos and its mantatory to get driving licence in manual car (or you can drive only automatic cars that are not easy to be found)

how can u feel driving if u dont downshift ?
