Ideally, yes, a child should be placed in the center of the rear seat. It is indeed the safest place for anyone to be in a car. However, with the proper precautions, including a seat with anchors and a five-point harness, the front seat is a safe alternative. I say this not only as a parent, but as a certified child safety seat installer.

As a professional firefighter and technical rescue specialist and possessing vehicle rescue certification I also am well aware of the effects of secondary restraint systems and how they function. With the proper seat for the child as discussed in the previous paragraph and the bucket seat moved back to the furthest point, the deployment of an airbag would not be a concern as the movement of the child even in a collision would be restricted such that he or she would not even come in contact with the bag.

Finally, I would also like to point out the setting for the photograph. You may have noticed that this is a parking lot in the early evening and that there are no other cars around. This particular lot happens to be within sight of my house. Even with the precautions that I take that I mentioned already, I still only put him in the front seat just to drive around within the confines of this parking lot and 2 secondary roads within my neighborhood that are posted 15 mph and heavily patrolled by police (who, incidentally, smile and wave while my son and I drive by). In fact, I don't put him in my car with the top down at all on any main roads, even in the back seat.

The reason I do it at all is because he thinks riding in the front is a big deal and a treat and I like to use it to reward him now and again. Besides, it's just fun. But all of this being said, I am removing the photo from my original post for the simple reason that it may encourage others who don't take the precautions that I do to place children in the same position, which may actually be a danger to them. I don't want to have any part of responsibility for that.

One final comment (sorry for hijacking the thread, by the way, but I felt I needed to respond) I'd like to add is that while I am pleased that people in general care about the welfare of children to the point that they will comment on it if they see something they think is wrong instead of merely looking the other way, I also am dismayed that what I thought was just a cute picture of my son in my car has required an explanation from me and now must be removed.

I do not understand. Recaro is outside of my vocabulary. Can you explain what you mean?

Okay, NVM - I just did some research and found that Recaro is a brand name of child safety seat, and I assume Bride is another brand. Neither one is available in my area. No, it's a Britax model, a gift from Grandma and Papa.

Those are cool. I didn't even notice them in the original photo until they were pointed out. So are they the standard badges for Celicas sold in your area or did you put them on yourself?

Thanks for the support. I was trying to find a shot of him driving his toy car around, but those are on my desktop at home. I'll put up something else once I have access to all of my photo files.

but yes as a responsible car community and family around here, if we see something assumed unsafe, its a responsibility of the community to call it out. If its correct then all is good, water under the bridge. If its wrong, ya fix it!

But not everyone is the sharpest tool in the shed and be default with kids i don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt. Though I'm glad you know what you are doing and thats cool! I come from a background of Child care providing and work with kids a lot so I've seen everything from dumb and dumber to the over protected bubble wrapped kid

but don't use distance as excuse, most accidents happen within 5 miles of the home @ low speeds (statistically speaking)

Thanks for the follow-up, Player. It's all good. I must admit, though, I had to take 15 seconds to eliminate the first five responses I had before I wised up and wrote something that actually resembled thoughtful dialogue.

I do appreciate that people look out for others, especially the little ones.

By the way, statistically, where does one do most of his/her driving?

I thought the pic was cute too. I want to commend both you and Playr for standing your ground and setting an example here on several levels, particularly the degree with which your messages were communicated. It allowed readers to see what could have been a blow-up of miscommunication become a simple comment of informed concern with an intelligent and articulate response. That's the kind of stuff that keeps this a quality place to be and sets this board apart from many others!
