ok i think i can help you out here. this is what i have learned. somebodyh correct me if im wrong though
3s= type of head gte= turbo charged perfroamnce engine the same thing goes for any other toyota engine. the first 2 characters denote what kind of head it is, and the last charcters denote whether the engine is an economy engine or a performance engine. the last charcters go something like this. fe= economy engine ge= performance engine gze= supercharged performance engine gte= turbocharged performance engine hope that helps u out. anybody correct me if im wrong though |

I thought that the first couple characters indicated the type of block, and the rest indicated the type of head. I think that the FE heads have a steeper valve angle and the GE heads have a more shallow valve angle.

S= the series
T= Turbo Z= Supercharger G= Performance F= Economy And the "E" and number at the begining of each engine code is a mystery to me. As for BMW's the 325 is the Car name, not the engine name, although the last 2 numbers are the engine size. Same with 240sx, and the 300zx. The 240sx has a 2.4 liter engine but the engine code is SR20DE. |

here ya go, this should clear things up:
http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/engine.htm edit: chrobis man, the 2.4l engine in the US 240sx is a KA24DE. Japanese spec is a CA18DET hence the name 180sx. the silvia on the other hand has the 2.0l SR20DET you speak of |

240sx has the ka24(d)e engine and it is a 2.4 liter ka24 stands for the block, the d is for DOHC which 91+ years had(89-90 had a sohc engine) e stands for probably electronic fuel injection all of the nissan Z cars had names that represented their displacement 240z 2.4 liter i6 260z 2.6 liter i6 280z 2.8 liter (not sure if it it was an i6, but very few came in turbo form, adding an x to the end of the name) 300zx 3 liter single turbo 300zx 3 liter twin turbo 350z 3.5 liter nissan started out with their cars having the same names as in japan, but people here did not like it so they went with alpha numeric names. it just stuck that way for some of their cars(ie silvia and 240sx) This post has been edited by 97sccelica: Oct 20, 2003 - 11:04 PM -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

BMW's HAD numbers that made sense. 328 was a 2.8L I6, the 318 was a 1.8L I4, NOW they went haywire and the numbers today 330, 323, they dotn mean ne thing cuz thats not the size of the engine.

hmm, I didnt know about the SR20DE... I knew the SR20DET was the turbo silvia's but I thought the SR20DE was the american N/A and the silvia N/A engine... Thanks for clearing that up.
Side question, since were talking about nissans. How hard is the SR20DET swap into a US 240sx? |

The BMW numbers are the size of the engine, I am absolutly sure of it. Check www.carpoint.com for engine info. or here is a direct link to the BMW engine info, SEE HERE!!!! This post has been edited by Chrobis: Oct 21, 2003 - 4:48 PM |

I saw what looked like an early 90's 240sx in Paris, but it said 200sx and 2.0 turbo. Do you think it was labeled like that because it had the SR20DET? I thought it was weird that it said 200sx because over here weren't they just 2 door Sentras? |

thats where it gets weird. I wasn't too sure about it either so I did a quick search. turns out the S13 bodystyle 200sx in europe came with the CA18DET engine. the S14 on the other hand came with the SR20DET. now the 200sx in the US came with either the SR20 or a 1.6l engine. how confusing is that? |
