I'm pretty sure that when I installed the new shock/spring setup, the shocks did not come with bump stops. Now, if I hit a decent size pothole, it sounds like the shocks are really taking a beating (you hear a loud 'thump'). This happens about once a week... Would getting bump stops reduce the chance of that happening?

Also, would I have to take the shocks off the car (and take the springs off too) in order to put the bump stops in? I'm thinking it might be cheaper to wait until I have to change the shocks altogether so I don't pay twice for labor... What do you guys think?

YEah bumpstops don't come with your struts, you have to reuse your olds ones. I would replae them as soon as possible as I would assume the solid contact may cause damage to the strut tower.

You can take the springs off and assembly apart to add the bumpstops or you can just slice the bumpstop on one side put it on the rod, and then use some duct tape to make sure the bumpstop stays in place.

yeah I don't have those either. it's been almost two years and so far all its ever done is make a loud noise.

(I'm told) all those are for is a safety if the strut collapses.

Having the same issue with my teins. I've been thinking this might be b/c of the extra weight of V6 though...

dunno?? but yeah the v6 could be the problem

If I could put them on without taking the shock out that would be great (even if I do it using duct tape hahaha)... I'd like to have them on before installing 17 inch wheels.

Will I have to get these from a dealer or can I get aftermarket ones?

Has anyone installed bump stops (or dampeners) with the shock already installed on the car?

my car 2" atm, but im getin lowered another 2" so 4" in total n guy said i need new bumpstops.

as rider asked, are they hard to install???

bumps stops do help abit if you are lowered ..

before my coilover days .. my car was lowered to 2" .. and then it was lowered a further 1.5" , making it 3.5" in total ..

during the time with the 2" drop .. the bump stops did the job , softening the blow on large "pot-holes" ..

but when i had dropped the car an extra 1.5" , the bump stops we useless .. the shocks had absolutely no travel ..

when finally raising the height of the car back up to 2" , i took notice of the bump stops , they were absolutely @#$^% !! it was shreadded and you could even break it off with your hands ..

thats my experience with bump stops on an extremely lowered set up

ok, bump stops are very important doubly so on lowered cars, else your putting a lot of strain on the top of the shock and every bult the strut assembaly is held on with when/if you bottom out the stock, the stoper softens the hit when it gets compressed all the way, if you have a lowered car the best thing to do is take the stock bump stops cut them in half and use the bottom half, thus you have more clearence before it hits and retian enough to keep it soft when it hits, I had my car lowered compleatly around 3.5-4" with my ground controls and ran without stops for a while, was a bad idea and with the roads around where i lived it hit alot. also keep in mind if you run without and it hits a decent amount of times, when it comes time to swap the shocks in front its next to imposible to get the top peace off the strut so the shock comes out as its been hammered in. I ended up buying a new set the tossing my old onces out because i could not take them apart.

I imagine it goes on the shock slide, correct? (not sure if that's the correct terminology) I'd like to see a picture of someone's suspension assembly on here so I can figure where it's placed.

A picture would be greatly appreciated indeed. Does anyone know if I can buy a bump stop (like the one GotToyota asked about) and install it without taking out the shock?

I have the bumpstop on my tien/kyb setup and it still makes crazy noise... but it seem to only happen on the passenger front. could it be that the shock is dead? it was brand new when i installed it and still made the noise.

Bump Stops really work - takes out those loud thumps.

Anyone have links to some we can buy?

well, after having my teins and GR2's for a while. I'm selling the teins, and I've been taking them off and I noticed that my front two bump stops were pretty bad. one of them actually came off in about a thousand little pieces, it just fell apart when I touched it. the other one looks like it's about to do the same... so if you lower your car, I'd suggest cutting the bump stops in half like the instructions that come with the tein springs say to do. lol. If I can find a working camera, I'll take a picture of one of my rear bump stops later today. the fronts look almost identical except they don't have little grooves on the bottom and they're red instead of orange. lol
