I don't mean any disrespect to you west coast 6GC'ers out there, but the more I read about your George Orwellian regulations on that side of the country, the more I'm I sit here in disbelief. I mean, California brought us the-ever-memorable Surfin' USA, The acid soaked Hippie Movement - Tune in - Turn On - Drop Out, and every other laid-back, pot laced theme you could think of. Yet, you can't do anything with your car or they'll take it away? I was just reading this story online (with photos) of dudes who had their cars taken away and crushed by "the man". Needless to say, they were Toyotas and Hondas. Dudes who were doing, say, 20 over the speed limit and were deemed "street racers"... Dude, if that was happening near Detroit, you'd just hear assault rifles and see the National Guard coming in. It'd make the '67 riots look like a practice round. Every Hillbilly in the land would be taking to the streets like road warrior. With giant stickers that said "MODDED" plastered on their cars. As much as I'm a history buff, I'm clueless as to how this took root..and who allowed it to happen. It's so over-the-top, I can't even wrap my head around it. Somebody fill me in. wow this happened a long time ago.
No they weren't just doing 20 over. This was a situation in where, these people were caught racing. Law is the law. IT IS ILLEGAL. If you want to play be prepared to play. Cops have been impounding and crushing cars since cars were invented. accept the consiquences of your actions. If you don't like the consiquences, don't break the law /idea |

last weekend i was on the way back from working late..i was cruisin in the right lane goin 70 (its like 2:40am) and some guy in a 240 comes up behind me goin at least 80 and slows down n starts tailgatn me. i'm like..dude, its late i wanna get home get off my nuts. so i signal to change lanes and he follows me. i go back to the right lane and he pulls up next to me and starts revvin his engine..LOL. so i speed up from 70 to 75 jus to mess with him and he pulls away goin at 100 while we go into a curved freeway junction. i go back to 70 and right then a CHP pulls past me from the onramp and follows the guy for about 3 miles before he pulls him over.
that night, i felt like the cops were doing their job. there are many times when they are just arseholes and i hate em for it. this is one of the times where the guy truly at fault got what he deserved. and the street racing thing isn't new, they have been crushin cars like playr said but it was rather recently when they started 'cracking down' on them a lot more because of dumb kids doin 80 on residentials and public streets, killing pedestrians and each other. and Cali_ST..i totally understand the whole charger chasin your arse. they have em around in riverside and jeesus, if i ever saw one chasin behind me i'd probably shiite myself lol -------------------- Pandelica 2.0 in progress. |

over here we get cops in Evo's, Scoobies, Lotus Elise' (English Motorways), VW Phaetons W12's, Passat W8's, Golf R32's, Vauxhall Omega MV6s Volvo T5's, you name it they got it, but from what i was reading over there in cali, they weren't only speeding or racing they were stealing other cars or handlng stolen goods, alot of 2.2 vtec preludes and accords were going missing and there engines were funnily found in a eg civics and the like, if your going to be at that kind of thing you deserve all you get, your better off doing it all legit and having nothing to worry about

That's exactly what I was reading/watching. In Michigan, the
cities/state/courts would want you to still have your car so they can make $$$$$ off you. We have a thing called the Driver's Responsibility Act. If you have over 7 points, it's a hundred dollars a year for each additional point you rack up. So if you had 10 points, you'd pay $300 a year to keep your license. If you get an impaired driving, it's $500 a year..and a drunk driving is $1000 a year. Not having insurance and other infractions also cost $150-$500 a year. This is completely separate from any court costs and is through the State of Michigan, not the courts. Failure to pay results in your driver's license being suspended. Everyone that has ever lived in or been to Michigan knows that it's impossible to not have a car. There's absolutely no public transit. So the courts and state are more prone to fining you than taking your license. If everyone that "screwed up" in Michigan lost their license or worse - Their car, the unemployment rate would be even higher. The strict laws you're referring to aren't those of the entire West Coast - remember, there's 2 other states here aside from just Cali! Those are specifically California laws; they have the strictest emissions standards in the US, which is what the laws are based on.

Let's not forget the green peace movement and the one I hate the most - the no smoking in public places law that has now spread to NY and Houston [Not Texas - just Houston].
They have a history of limiting the individual's rights for sake of "The common good" -------------------- ENGINE: '93 RC 3S-GTE/WRC CT-20b [18-20PSI] PERF: TRD/HKS/ARP/NGK/MSD/ACT/Blitz/STRI/APEX'i/TwosRus/GReddy/Magnaflo/KOYO SUSP: Tein/Bilstein/SusTech/ INT: SS-III SEATS/Toyota Hyper Sports EXT: WRC/TRD/404 Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them. How is Oregon and Washington with their laws?
Do they make you do the "hood popping" on a standard pull-over? I've spent a lot of time in Washington and been through Oregon a couple times. The first time I drove through was at 3 am about 7 years ago or so. This guy came up to the car in the darkness and asked, "regular 87?"..I thought he was a homeless person trying to pump my gas for money. I snapped, "I'll pump it myself, Dude!"...He just gave me a funny look and said, "That's against the law"...He explained and I apologized. So funny. The scenario is burned into my psyche. Yeah, Death, the smoking thing wouldn't last two seconds here, either. I've seen it in New York..even upstate New York. It's put tons of bars and bar/grills out of business in both Buffalo and Rochester. Places that have been in business for over a hundred years. First, they told them they had to have an enclosed, separate smoking room...so the bars spent tons of money building these rooms with smoke eaters and what not. A BIG investment. Then, right after they were done building them, they said "No, Nevermind, No one can smoke now. Period". Financial ruin 101. -------------------- My new, blue spark plug wires gave my Celica, roughly, 250 more horsepower..

You know - I used to think all the good ole boys driving around Houston with the gunrack and shotgun in the backwindow of their pickup trucks would shut down that stupid law in ahurry if it ever came here [I do regular business in upstate NY so I saw it coming] - suddenly I see no more shotguns in pickup truck windows anymore and here we are wondering if it's gonna be our cars next, and then our lawns, and then our homes.
And then we got a law passed for 10 traffic cameras for "dangerous" intersections - next thing I know they are fcukin everywhere, on every intersection, on freaking 50ft poles pointing in 4 directions and I'm wondering exactly how much can they see now? I called that one too. I agree with anti street racing laws but our liberties are being jacked and we're doing nothing to stop it. I'm personally ashamed to be compliant. Yeah, it's true about not being able to pump your own gas in Oregon. IDK what the deal is w/that, but what the end result is that I'm a complete retard when it comes to pumping my own gas. I learned to drive when I lived in NYC, where it's also illegal to pump your own gas. Then I moved here. So I'm kind of a retarded princess when it comes to pumping gas.
As for the hood-popping thing, I know another member on here who lives in OR had that happen to him once I believe, but otherwise, I'd never even heard of it until I saw it mentioned on this board. Granted, I've only had one speeding ticket in my life, and that was about 10 years ago going through eastern Oregon with NY plates. But seriously, I've never even heard of that. Regarding modding your car here, I think the laws are fairly similar to the laws elsewhere. I don't know specifically what the laws are regarding swapping an engine, but I *think* that as long as you can pass DEQ, you can swap the engine out. Most of the laws are common sense/safety or DEQ related. You can have an aftermarket header and/or intake as long as it'll pass DEQ. You cannot cut your catalytic converter out - you won't pass DEQ. You can have aftermarket exhaust, but it can't be excessively loud and it must be able to get you through DEQ. You can't change the color of your car's exterior lights, for the most part. No neon license plate frames, as it impairs the ability to read the license plate from 50' away. Stuff like that. And all pretty reasonable if you ask me. -------------------- |
