well,i bought Chinaman's celica two weeks ago, and it's just been running worse and worse since i got it. rough idle, poor acceleration, just horrible engine performance all around. friday night it threw the Check Engine light and later it would barely move. i found myself literally "flooring" it to get moving at all. so today i decided to borrow a friends tools, change my plugs, wires, and fuel filter and ....Voila! problems solved. runs great now. very strong, no hesitation, no bogging down, smooth idle too! And No more Check Engine Light.
![]() I used NGK wires, and NGK Laser platinum plugs, and a Napa (Wixx) Fuel Filter. tomorrow i will hopefully change the cap, rotor, pcv valve, valve cover gasket with a friend, along with the CV shaft (never done that). Erich |

Sounds like the car was not kept up to date poor maintenance is REALLY common on 'most' used cars. I would say before you change your valve cover gasket or any other major gaskets run seafoam through your motor it'll also tell you where you have bad gasket leaks its better to get all those things done at once.

Yeah, man, my baby ran like crap after I got her back. Seriously.
I put on new plugs, wires, distributor, distributor cap and rotor and she ran like the day I got her. I've got to do my fuel filter as well...As soon as I get the extra cash. -------------------- My new, blue spark plug wires gave my Celica, roughly, 250 more horsepower..

How hard is it to replace the fuel filter? I'd possibly like to do mine depending on what it takes.

Erich Exactly why I had to drop my price and you ended up outbidding me. I figured that's all it was. Steven is a very nice guy and very up front with info on that car. Problem was he didn't do much/if anything to maintain it. I'd say you got a few more items to clear and the car will be like new drivetrain wise. As for that CV replacement we were talking about, I don't know many shops on your side of town but I do know one over this way that the owner/head mechanic is very honest and very good. His mechanics are also very knowledgeable and he is constantly overseeing their work. They consistantly underbid everyone else as well. It's called Premier Auto on Senate and 290 [in the shadow of beltway 8 so a quick jump and one toll for you]. Call em up and ask for an estimate. How hard is it to replace the fuel filter? I'd possibly like to do mine depending on what it takes. Not hard at all. Make sure you get new crush washers and be prepared to put some very heavy torque on those fittings - If they haven't been changed out before they can be very difficult to remove. That's about it. It's located under the intake just in front of the Brake Master Cylinder BTW. -------------------- ![]() ENGINE: '93 RC 3S-GTE/WRC CT-20b [18-20PSI] PERF: TRD/HKS/ARP/NGK/MSD/ACT/Blitz/STRI/APEX'i/TwosRus/GReddy/Magnaflo/KOYO SUSP: Tein/Bilstein/SusTech/ INT: SS-III SEATS/Toyota Hyper Sports EXT: WRC/TRD/404 Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them. i figured it would be hard to change the Fuel filter at first just because it sits at an odd spot. and im used to the quick release Ford type filters. the filter was OEM i think too. made by Denso.. and im told Toyota no longer uses denso anymore? and the car has 140K miles on it. lol
anyway, it was very easy. take intake off, and its right there on the wall of the bay.rear side of the battery. i bought a filter from napa. with the mounting bracket assembly on the filter. i took out the mounting bolts, loosened the top bolt on the filter, raised the fuel line up so it wouldn't drain anything out(or very little), then took the bottom bolt out. I had to really use some effort on these bolts, so gloves might be a good idea in such confined space..im going to give a try changing the cv shaft today. along with the balljoints. hopefully everything goes well. then seafoam later... will fuel filter help reduce misfiring? I don't think a fuel filter can cause a misfire a bad fuel injector on the other hand yes. A good way to help or even cure a misfire is getting a good tune-up for your car. My car runs fine, but I'm going to get new spark plug wires, distributor cap/rotor, and fuel filter. I haven't done them yet, and might as well at 175k miles. I doubt my fuel filter has ever even been changed.

make sure to use a flare nut wrench and pb blast dat sucker a few times and soak it. for the fuel filter. I forgot to add that ignition coil really helps as well.
