Ok, hit the wear indicators on the Celi yesterday, NOT going to drive around listening to squealing for too long. Here's the skinny of what I'm looking at/thinking:
Pads -- Either going to be EBC Redstuff, or Hawk HPS. Whichever I find a better deal on. I've used both brands and trust both, so that's that for that. Rotors -- Sadly, there's just NOT a good bunch of options out there for the 6GC. Having seen the 7th Gen brake thread though, and knowing that the 7th Gen front rotors are 3mm thinner than the 6GC GT rotors, I'm thinking of popping a decent set of 7th Gen front rotors on the car. But...... What about the 7th Gen REAR brake rotors??? Are those the same at the 6th Gen GT in terms of diameter and offest? And.....going to have the calipers and brackets powdercoated red while they're off the car. Oh I wish I had the cash for a big brake kit upgrade on the front if not both. -------------------- |

here you can see the diameter # for front and rear 7th gen, just measure the 6th gen and compare
the rear on the 7th gen are 10.58" brake chart -------------------- |

I found this chart in the 7th Gen Brake Thread:
According to it, the only difference in the 7th Gen Rotor to 6th Gen GT Rotor is a .5mm overall height difference, and a 3mm thickness difference. The height difference will be negated by the rotor thickness. The Rears however, have some differences. Diameter is the same, but height has some issues. The 6th Gen is 9mm taller overall than the 7th gen rotor. Other than that, they're the same. So I'm left wondering, since I've yet to do brakes on a 6th Gen.......on the rears, does the rotor simply come off without any bearings, just a pull and replace unit? If so, would a 9mm spacer be able to be used to push the rotor out a tad? Not that the rears are a big deal to me, but I'd rather have a full matching set of rotors than two slotted or something up front and two standard blanks in teh back. -------------------- |

Think I found what I might do. Napa has some REALLY decent pricing on it's standard blanks: Local store quoted me at $38.01 each for the fronts and $30.67 each for the rears. I may just go that route with the EBC or Hawks pads, and then save the pennies for the shock upgrade which is needed more than anything, and then a big brake upgrade some time after that.
Besides, I've always been impressed with the factory brakes on this car. Makes my big honking brakes on my Trans Am feel like circa 55' drums. -------------------- |

red stuff isn't going to be that good for street.....
HPS and some Brembo blanks will be a great setup. Save your money and stick with 6gc fitment parts. and get some SS brake lines. They will be sufficient for you. Also don't forget to flush your fluid with some fresh quality brake fluid. The rotors just slide off. no set screws or anything. This post has been edited by playr158: Aug 22, 2008 - 1:29 PM |

I have the TRD brake pads with the 7th gen calipers, EBC slotted disc and SS brake lines ( front set-up )
the car stops on a dime, I just hate the freaking dust, the TRDs are the dustiest pads ever, when is time to replace them I'll go with something else, -------------------- |

I've got NAPA premium rotors on my rear brakes (I did the GT disc conversion) and overall I'd say I'm really happy with them. One thing I'm not happy about is that the center "hub" or whatever that part is, is rusty on the surface. My front rotors (which came from Schuck's/Checker's/Kragen) were replaced at the same time and are doing the same thing. I'm not sure how to prevent this or if the Brembos will do it too, but it's something to be aware of. The surface that the pads actually touch are totally fine though.

What you're describing is normal. I plan to combat this by having the hub centers powder coated black when I take the calipers in for red powder coat. -------------------- |

That's a good solution... too bad I didn't think of this before! Maybe I can take the rotors off, remove the rust, and high-temp paint 'em? Would that work too, do you think?
Oh, and for whatever it's worth - I put premium ceramic pads on all around, and I've been VERY happy with them. Stopping power is very good and to me, worth the small trade-off to have less brake dust. Maybe doesn't stop on a dime, more like a nickle but not quite a quarter -------------------- |

THat would work, just take a wire wheel to the areas to be painted to get rid of all the rust. High temp paint works fine. I'd probably do the same but I'll be at the coaters dropping the calipers off anyway (Red anyone??? ) so I figured just do it that way. -------------------- |

I bought a set of brembo blanks and hawk HPS pads from tire rack.
Good: Excellent stopping power hot or cold! I used to have a set of ceramic pads that were terrible cold but worked well once they warmed up. Not a problem with the hawks. Bad: Brake dust. Lots of Squeal. Remember the thread I just posed about the clear coat on my lip being eaten away? This happened right after installing the hawk pads. The dust was pretty bad at first, but seems to have settled down a bit. The old ceramic pads I used to have (satisfied pro) didn't dust at all. Also, I have a lot of squeal. Im not really sure if I can blame the hawks for this or not. Im missing the extra shims and anti rattle springs that are supposed to be on the pads. I believe this is whats causing the noise, as my old pads did the same thing. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

My stopping like yours excellent hot or cold. Dust hasn't been too bad, though it is there and i have NO squealing at all. They are dead silent. unlike the Brembo blanks + Hawk HPS pads we put on my X's Honda Accord 07' about 2 months ago. Her brakes like to produce a faint squeal. We've done everything from shims to no shims, lube and anti-squeal compounds and it just makes noise. Dust on her's as well is definitely noticeable. |

I'm using Satisfied Pro ceramic pads too, and I've been very happy with them. I haven't really noticed whether they work better when "warmed up" or not, but then again I've only had them on about a month now. I'm sure if I notice a difference, it'll be when it gets cold and rainy here again in a couple of months. I DEFINITELY appreciate the total lack of dust and squeal though.
I think I'll go ahead and clean up the hubs on the rotors and paint them or something. It sucks to have moderately decent wheels, fancy schmancy red calipers, and rusty old looking rotors after only a month! -------------------- |
