I know the welds you may see are not the best, but im upside down on my back working with 3/16 metal and however thick the metal is on that spot...my first attempts weren't to great but guarentee not to break, i've been building Low-Riders most of my days, hopping all four off the ground, hitting back bumper and never broke a weld...maybe the car around it but no welds....goppy or not it'll hold. Did you know your car is put together with spot welds??? And like he said...yes it'll get clean'd up and presentable, reinforced Pipes was just so excited He had to go drive it..wouldn't you if you had an RHD AWD Celica.....wait you don't owned.gif

first off, pipes, sorry, but no, that was not a good "wow".

i applaude your efforts, and like i told dan (player158) back in the day when he did the "suprica" "people may bust on ya, but i'll give you major props, if for nothing else than for having the balls to try it."

that said, that car is ruined.

that rear end looks like swiss cheese he blew so many holes in it.

what was used to weld this up? please tell me it was some cheap stick welder, cause anything else would be unacceptable to me. do you understand the kind of torsional stress that rear end is gonna see when this kid is ripping this car around corners like a madman, cause he thinks hes got a cool AWD car? god forbid that thing decides to take a crap on him at high speed, never mind high speeds and cornering.
i would be ashamed to show off and boast about somthing like what you have presented here.
that car is just dangerous, to both the owner, and anyone else around him on the road.
you may be able to get the kids that dont know any better around here to jump up and down and shout "ohh man i want one!", but if THAT is what an AWD celica conversion has to look like to have one, ill pass, thanks.
now i will admit, i am no professional welder, however, one of the first things i have learned, is that in order to actually weld things, and not just melt some metal onto another peice of metal, things have to be clean.
i cant see how you call this welding.

the factory undercoating is still on the car, how can you call that a weld? or is the rubberized undercoating used to help join the 2 metals?
it dont matter if youve "fixed" it or not, this stuff is all the base that you started from.
you can polish a turd all day, but at the end of the day, its just a shiny turd.
laugh.gif

sure, your "bouncing cars" may hold, but the diffrence is this:

if one of those cars decides to break, it aint gonna be at 100mph, its gonna be more like 10-15mph, MAX. lets be realistic, when do people do that stuff? at very low speeds, and stopped, espcially if its a "hopper".
this car is gonna be pushed, i would assume.
how can you trust those welds in those conditions?
i just hope that when it does break, that this kid and/or others dont get killed.

How can you say this for sure? There has been what maybe 4 awd converted celicas out there and I think one had issues with not being able to go straight at high speeds. Please don't be cocky with this. Me and my buddies are happy for you with achieving your goals and all the time and effort put into building this car. I'm not going to lie it was nice to see a converted car running, but then again how long did it take you guys to whip this thing up?

You should be happy and proud of your work, but please don't rub it in and be cocky about your car, because in the end my car will more then likely last longer then yours after getting beated on for a long period of time.

Now how does that feel?

ok so from a "welders" view...i give u props on trying this and it not falling apart but manny brings up very very key points....lookin at some pics like he said doesnt look like stuff was very clean....contamintes will screw you over every time.... u may not see it on the out side of ur weld but most times it causes porosity which is swiss chees inside ur weld making it junk...not saying urs are but if the base arent cleaned and preped then sh*t will happen..also ur weld design has alot to due with the strenght also but i assume ur thickness on this build went from 3/16 to maybe 1/4 inch bevels and such dont comply here...also here is a big thing also....what did you use to weld...i seen a mig in a picture so i assume you used that with some sheilding gas...but what wire??? did you use a flux core or a hard wire...in your defence its hard to make welds look nice with hard wire speicaly with stuff like this in an akward position and dirty base.. flux core wire would have been best prolly.....good luck with it..ur going over it all and fixing stuff so keep it up....alot of pressure will be applied to these joints so dont let em break!! lol also just a heads up....one of the most important things i learned welding with vechiles......if u weld it....it breaks....some one gets hurt...you who welded are liable....so keep that inmind...any who keep it up!

and the other celi i was personally underneath with a camera loking for ideas.. not sure but can be pretty close

How does that feel? Um if the car breaks it breaks you either fix it or give up personally the car breaking isn't something I'm worried about....I have another car.....these things come and go.... not being cocky or trying to rub it in plans ar already in motion to redo things everything you guys say is taken into consideration....me and my buddy don't know everything that's why were on the forum....but thanks for the advice guys keep you updated

if it breaks you better pray it breaks while you are going in a straight line at low speed. if something like that breaks @ highway speed...i seriously hope you have airbags....you'll need them.

pipes good luck to you guys.

Wow, if for some reason I was attempting this too, I would not post about it only for this reason.
I mean, yes, I understand you are concerned about safety, but some people are taking it a bit far and downright talking sh!t about his work.
Point out what he did wrong or could have done better, why its wrong, and maybe why he should trust you and listen to you(like you weld as a profession or build prototype cars lol)
Not, "Your welds suck, look at mine *pwned.*"
These guys have put in countless hours of work and way too much money and they don't want to come on here and have people be rude.
Most of these people are the "older" members and have seen this stuff before, but you older members should also know this site is based on these rules:

1. Keep your posts clean. These forums, like the rest of the site, are designed to be a family-safe environment, and that means that you must watch your use of obscenities. This also means not attacking others in your posts. You must respect everyone here. If you're not going to post something helpful or respectful, don't post. This also means no pornography, sexist, racist, hateful, or illegal content as well.

2. Be nice to the new members! They're new, and if they post something that has been posted a lot in the past, don't answer with something such as "Do a search." Instead, maybe do a search yourself, and link them to a couple informative threads, or write a post that answers their question, with a friendly comment at the end of your post to maybe do a search next time. Remember, we were ALL new once.

5. Don't call people out on whether or not they have what they say they have on their car. If people really have what they have, they'll post pics eventually in most cases, and if they don't, oh well, just live your life and don't worry about them. Just live life and don't get all worked up about whether or not someone on a website has what they say they have.

it does not have to be. Guys chill out, and pipes good job.

Like any other car thats been modified. No matter what the modification, who does it, if it affects structural integrity, the car is no longer OEM and the owner is responsible. So that even puts me in the list.

We all modify our cars, some more than others, thats ok, everybody assumes a risk. fine. But lets not shoot pipes in the foot, hes doing something i would be afraid to do. so thats a lot to digest. it would be sad to see this post being closed for hostility.

Aside from all, i think pipes has been very cool in his responses, i dont feel like he ever atacked anybody in particular.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

Ill add in my .2c.

Thanks for posting pics and videos. I think the more info we have about this conversion the better. It takes a lot of hard work to pull off a full conversion like that, and props to you for the effort you put into it. I hope you post more details about your conversion process to help benefit the community and to show others what you should/shouldn't do.

Do I think you did things right? no.
Do I think that rear end is just going to fly off the car while driving? no, but there is good chance you might have some issues with it.
Keep an eye on things and stay safe. Remember that you have a rear end that was hacked onto the car, and that there is a lot more stress on the rear in an awd car then there is on a slow n low rider.

just in respect to the elders here, i won't say much.... but keep in mind this is a forum and i beleive there are more proper ways of telling someone that their attempt to do something was poor espeicially if you havent tried it your self. It is true maybe the way it was put together isn't the greatest way but this is kinda all about trial and error. We arn't driving little grocery getters here.........half of us are always trying to build something new, hands down... i agree with lagos
