i was always curious to why every single rx7 and other mazdas dont last past 80k...every listing on autotradder, craigslist, and ebay says that the motor has been rebuilt or replaced at some time....they are supposd to be "hard to blow up motors" from what a couple people have told me due to the rotor and the fact that there are no pistons, but i dont find that to be true at all...check out what i came across on a mazda forum...this guys is giving tips on "How to drive"..lol

" Basically, you hit the gas as hard as you can. The needle will go to the red area which is like red for "stop". When it goes to the red thingy the needle will bounce back which is your cars way of saying "GO" since its going away from the "STOP". At that point completely remove foot off clutch pedal as quickly as possible. The car will start to shake violently which is similar to what a dog does when it likes how you are petting it... again mazdas way of saying, "good job, i like what you are doing here, you are right on the mark and honda sux". Now, you might get some tire smoke and rattling but this is normal by design. Once you are moving forward, if you keep your foot down on the floor your car again will go to the red thingy and then bounce back which means "go go go" at that point you shift into second gear and repeat the process. Basically, you want to stay in 1st gear until roughly 40mph, then second gear until 65 miles per hour. Really, most city streets are 65mph or less so there is no need to really ever go out of second unless you onto the highway. Once on the highway, third will be enough. I really dont know what 4th and 5th are there for, probably for racing or a leftover from the european spec made for the autoban. I hope you learned something today. "


Now this is why mazda motors dont last very long...its all very clear now...i know we have a mazda fan on here swapping in a 2jz or something...we'll have to see what he says about this...lol

The most surefire way to preserve the longevity of your Mazda Rotary engine - buy a Miata for a DD [That's what my Mazda friends do anyway]

They are all rebuilt because the rotary motors loose compression over time. Its not that they blow up, just wear away after a while.

rotaries blow up because people dont look after them properly.

despeite having only 6 moving parts they need to be properly warmed up and down, and make sure your oil feed works,l or premix your fuel correctly. (rotaries from the factory have oil injection also to help with lubrication. Some people dont trust it and premix the oil into their fuel like you would a 2 stroke, this is why they use oil.

the apex seals are typically fragile and they cant stand detonation at all.

so the thing is look after them they will last as long as anything else.

That's true. They have these ends that wear out. Previous were good for about 50k miles (plus you need to constantly dump oil in it. What was it? Every 3 gas fill ups?) and now the new ones are good for about 80k-100k miles.

i told my mom that's how everyone drives nowadays, not just me! She's just old fashion....

if you maintain anything properly it will last...i completely agree...but suprisingly you will not find a low milage rx-7 thats in good condition...because no one knows how to properly maintain them and thinks that they can beat the sh!t out of them and have no problems....every single rx-7 owner i know has eiter replaced their motor or had to rebuild it at some time due to someone beatin the crap out of it and not mainting it properly...its like anything...and this is the bible..."you take car of your car, due regular maintaince and it will last a lifetime, beat the crap out of it and you'll be lucky to get what you paid for the car." its not just toyotas that last forver, i have seen hondas, nissians, mazadas, and espically chevys last a long time with simple oil changes, and routine maintaince.

Every rotary that I've seen needing rebuilt the apex seals were always the first thing to go. It's just the design, how it physically works that the seals will only last so long. Even if you follow the maintenance bible the seals will still go bad, you may just be lucky and get to 120-130k before they need done instead of 80-100k.

Now as far as other Mazdas, my 91 Miata with 100k on it took a beating every day, no problems whatsoever. Redlining every shift etc never had an issue.

The point is, that its a fragile motor. Even if you "take care of it", its going to break. They dont call it Rotary eXperimental for nothing.
