my front right has been squeaking like the hell and i cant seem to find the problem.

took the brakes out and cleaned them with brake cleaner and applied that brake contact grease thing that's supposed to help ease squeal. that dont work......

looked and check the brake pad clips and bent them to they fit really snug on the brake caliper bracket.

i lightly scuffed my rotor and pad to see if there is any type of glazing that could make a noise or what ever. scuffed both sides of the rotor wink.gif i did scuff both fr left and fr right (problem spot) while the car was up.

depressed the piston on both sides and blead the brake system while i was there laugh.gif

and still the front right (pass side) still squeals. it squeaks especially when i apply the brakes at lets say 5%, and it squeaks when ever i turn to the left at about 3-15 degrees frown.gif

its getting really annoying, i dont have old brakes, just changed them recently, rotors were resurfaced at that time also.

where is the noise coming from?!?!?!?!

**could cheap brake shims that came with the new brake pads cause the squeaking???

thanks lew for you input

I have the same problem with my rear passenger brake (disc conversion). If I very gently apply the brakes, it makes this sound that's not really a squeal, but is for lack of a better term. It actually reminds me of the sound a glass makes when you run your finger around the edge to make it hum or however you'd describe that sound. My brake sounds like the rotor is making that sound from the brake pad just barely touching it, just right. It's made that sound since the day I did the conversion - doesn't do it all the time, but I especially notice it when I'm sitting in slow-moving traffic.

fo'real???

well im thinking the same thing...that the brakes are lightly touching somehow, but its not a humming noise, its full on squeaking annoying noise like i need to change the pads. im thinking its those "V" metal spring thingys (dont know the exact term) that kinda push the pads out kindasad.gif

kinda shame driving a nice shiny car then the brake squeaks when i turn to park or slightly press the brake. not so appealing to them ladies laugh.gif

My left front side does the same thing, only on a light application of the brakes. after i push the brakes kinda heavy it stops. kindasad.gif If you figure it out let me know..

I dont think its warped rotors, i have new brembo blanks in front. Its gotta be something with the seating of the pads or shims or something. i dont know. I have heard that grease on rotors can make squeal but i dont think waxing is necessary really, lol.

the symptom for warped rotors will be some severe shaking on the steering/car when moderately braking, but thats when the rotors are really bad.

well ive been through it all with brakes...my big problem was a bad front bearing which caused uneveness in the rotor making the brakes squeel, took me months to figure it out

sometimes they just need cleaning (Use a vacuum if you go that route, or you can poison yourself if you use something to blow it around or endanger someone else: Asbestos).

If you have ABS and the squeal isn't that bad but just annoying, they tend to do that. Sometimes again, could always be brake dust. Depends how severe it is.

Sorry, I just jumped in without knowing what is going on. I just had to offer some advice and calm down.

I had/have this problem as well.
Mine were getting really bad, until I noticed that I dont have all the shims that our cars are supposed to have. Each wheel should have 4 shims on it. After installing mine, the very loud squeal has gone away. At most now I hear a very faint noise that is mostly likely from the actual brake pads.

What brand pads are you using and do you have 4 shims per side?

Ahhh i see now biggrin.gif i only have 1 shim per pad on each rotor.

but why isnt the right making noise and only the left is??? i do have some shaking under braking but im ruling it as "bad alignment"
I also replace my bearings on both sides.

well anywho......i did stare at my shims and it looks like its moving around because the piston imprint is slightly larger than the actually piston ring itself.

i did re-scuff my rotors tonight. the noise went away but came back after pressing the brakes lke 5 times.

im going to go get a set of brake hardware kit from my local auto parts store and i'll install more shims and see if the noise goes away.

when you say 4 shims per side, is it 2 each pad/4 total right or left, or 4 each pad/8 total per side????
IIRC i seen 4 shims when i bought my pads....so that means i used all what had kindasad.gif kindasad.gif 1 shim per pad confused.gif kindasad.gif

mahalos guys for the input when i install more shims and "if" the noise goes away then i guess everyone can learn from this thread.

ive got the hawk hps pads on, they are really dusty. kindasad.gif

i dont have ABS either, i wish i did though, its a lifesaver.

and i only have one shim per pad, making 2 for each rotor. I didnt know that they should be double stacked..

I don't have ABS either (which is fine by me, it's one less sensor problem to worry about) and I have ceramic pads, so it's definitely not a dust issue. Mine is a different squeal than dust-squeal or brake shim squeal. I have two shims on each pad, by the way.

Mine really isn't a squeal sound - I don't know a better word for it though. It sounds like a tiny version of the sound tractor trailors make when they brake. It's that semi-high pitched but "gutteral" sound. I really think it's the rotors generating the sound. It has occurred to me that I could have a bad wheel bearing that's causing the rotor to sit unevenly or something. There's no indication of warping, and the drums, when I pulled them to do the disc swap... crap, actually, come to think of it, the shoes off that wheel had worn down differently than the other wheel. Hmm. Maybe it is a bad wheel bearing? What other symptoms might there be?

My drums squeal/squeak like crazy, but only when coming to a stop, say under 15 MPH.

Mine squeal pretty bad and I thought it had to do with the weather because once the temp went up in the spring, the squealing was gone for good, but sadly now it's back. I remember applying that stop squeal spray to the back of the pads and if I recall, I had 2 stacked shims on the outer front pads (one was black, the other shiny silver), but I only remember maybe 1 on the back pad. There should be 4 total on each front rotor? Same with the rear rotors?

Anyone have part numbers or a rough price for these shims? I think i'm shy a couple.

well i just went to my local parts store.........

fastbird (i think) told me on my WTB thread that it was called "brake hardware kit". the boss dude told me they dont carry that kind of stuff frown.gif frown.gif
he told me to replace my caliper, rotor, and pads one time laugh.gif yeah right like im made of money tongue.gif so i guess im going to bump my WTB thread.
