Hi all just wondered if anyone had a similar problem. The ariel won't fully retract it stays out about 8" and I'm worried some braindead's going to snap it off
Many thanks in advance |

does it keep trying to retract ? you can buy a rebuild kit for it or just grab a used one from ebay. you can also convert to a s2000 aerial which is smaller and sportier.

It doesnt keep trying, no its like the end point had decided to be a few inches sooner than it should be. cant force it down by hand either, it keeps springing back like a shock absorber! do i have to replace the whole unit then, theres no way i can just reset the relay or something? |

there I can't help you, my aerial came defective with the car, so I never got to play around with it, I'm just replacing it. but I'm sure others will know exactly what to do.

No, there is nothing to reset. Your problem is mechanical.
First, if you're mechanically capable, take the whole antenna (aerial) assembly out of the car and take it apart. There may be something jamming the mast. If it's not jammed, you will find the toothed drive cable broken or stripped. If so, you will need to buy a replacement mast kit, about $70 from a dealer in the US. It will contain a new telescoping mast with new drive cable. Replacing the whole unit is much, much more expensive and unnecessary if the motor works. If you're not mechanically inclined, a competent shop can do the replacement mast in an hour's worth of labor. |

The stock antennaes are the only lemon on our cars I've always said. Toyota retractable antennaes are the absolute sux. Better to spend your money on a nicer replacement or you'll be doing this again in a year or two

Better to spend your money on a nicer replacement or you'll be doing this again in a year or two I have had several used cars, all different brands, with same issue. I have replaced the masts and none ever broke again. Secret: they don't get cleaned. They are retracted when going through car wash or hand washing and people don't think to put them up and clean them. Dirt is what kills them. |
