Just jacked the car up for a service to find that I have torn the right hand side outter CV boot and the left hand side has cracks and looks like it may tear soon.

Is it worth replacing the cv on the rhs or just the boot? Is it a big job? I shouldn't need to replace the axle will I?
Ill get photos up soon.

I searched but could find anything that helped me. Im sure someone out there will find what im after but i tried.

Any help would be great I can pick up a CV joint for ~NZ$55. I will find out the OEM price tomorrow.

Thats what i thought. Yea its not OEM tho ill get a hold of toyota tomorrow and talk to them.

Is it a mission of a job and do I have to take the axle out. Anyone have a step by step how to or anything. I have the Haynes manual but its not really talking about my model as its more american and it says something about drive shaft length and it varies.

How hard is it to remove the CV from the axle?

both of mine are ripped as well...its a f-in mess if you dont get it taken care of right away...flings grease everywhere underneath and along side of the car...if you can get the boots they are not that expensive but im not sure where to get them...i dont think they sell just the boots any more...you might have to replace the whole thing

Hey 95 I agree grease gets everywhere. I can get a hold of boots as well but i think the right hand side CV is now abit buggered. I noticed that the car started to act a little weird under power mainly when turning and i believe the CV is the problem.

Surely someone on here has replaced a CV before.

Looks like I might be doing a how to on this.

To me, if you have the time and the patience to do it, I would. But its one of those things where you don't change it so often, so paying for it works for me.

I don't know about changing the cv boots, but i recently changed my entire axles- it was cheap and easy if you know how to do it.

unless rebuilt/new axles are too scarce, i wouldnt see the sense in going through the extra aggravation of taking out the axle to change the cv when you can just swap out axles and be done with it... kindasad.gif

Its not hard just figuring it out at first, time, effort, patience, is what is involved. Do you have another car to drive in case you don't finish? That is the other things.

changing the boot isnt the easiest thing to do. first you have to pull the axle out and clamp it down to a vice. Remove the rings so you can expose the grease on the side that is ripped. You will see that the joint isn't one piece behind the grease. You take a hammer and start hacking at it so it removes the shaft from the other part. Once that is out, you will be able to slip the boot on and re-attach everything. installing it back is the hard part, there is a small locking ring on the shaft that is almost impossible to get it (kind of like slipping a piston into the block, you need to compress the rings, the shaft also has a ring) I would do a write up but its too late. I hated doing the boots, try replacing the whole shaft if the costs arent too great.

I would definitely replace the entire axle. They weren't very expensive when I did them, and the parts store should give you a core payment for turning in the old axle when you're done. Plus it's super easy compared to replacing just the boot or joint.

I did the entire axle last year on my celi, and it wasn't too bad. it took about 2 hrs just cuz it was my first time doing it, but it is fairly straight forward. R&R involves jacking car, removing the wheels, taking off the hub nut (24mm), and then depending on if you can wiggle it or not, taking the calipers/suspension parts. I took off the 3 bolts holding the lower control arm off, just to give a bit more wiggle space. Got a reman axle and install is reverse of uninstall. Packed it with the axle grease that was supplied with the reman axle, put some threadlock on the 6 bolts holding the axle to the tranny, popped the new axle onto the hub, and put everything back together.

FWIW I would recommend going with a new/reman axle set over trying to replace just the boot, and as a preventative measure, I would do both sides, esp if the other is already cracking. BTW I work at a dealership (albeit not toyota) and they use either reman axles or will just "rebuild" them on the spot (take it apart, clean the old grease out, repack it, and put a new boot on). Call around local auto stores, most carry reman axles, and most have a warranty on their stuff, so it would be better IMO than a part from toyota.

i tried to replace my cv boot myself but i couldn't figure it out but i didn't use any manuals or anything though. since i get free axles anyway i just went and replaced the entire axle. it's easier to swap the axle instead of replacing the torn boot with a new one. but seeing that your driver-side axle (the longer axle) is torn, so you will also need to swap the axle carrier bearing housing from the old axle to the new axle. the carrier can be easily removed and installed using a hydraulic press.

also, i have a brand new cv boot from Toyota that i don't need anymore.. so if you want to try replacing your cv boot, pm me.

Cheers for all the replies. I ran into an ex toyota mechanic today and he said CV's are a piss of piss but he said i will most likely have to take the axle out ill do abit of ringing round tomorrow. Its also good cos if i get into strive he will come and help me out.

Yea luckily I can borrow the olds Prado if i get in trouble with it. Il drive round a few places tomorrow and have a look.

Update: I got two cv's for $26 each and tried to take the old ones out. couldn't get the old ones to move out of the hub and its so hot with 100% humidity I didnt have the patience to nut it out so took the car to the local mechanic and the old cv's had seized in the hub. It took their big hydraulic press to move it out and it only just pushed out.

What I saved on the cv's is going into labour but hey it happens.
