Its real difficult to tell what the perfect rim and wheel combo is. There is offset, width, tire size, ride height, and camber angle that has to be factored in. However, from the pictures, others can give you ideas on how they look and what their specs are.

good plan on the lightweight 17s
think about 17x8 oz's, they are super light and beautiful and popular on gt-fours
225/45/17 fills the fender, i really doubt that 225/55/17s would fit
also the 225/45/17s should be enough rubber to cushion the pot holes

im in the process of searching for a good price on some 15 or 16" wheels. Although a buddy said he'd give me his GTS wheels for free, so i might just call it a day on those. Im saving my money for tires. besides, its a headache finding a good lightweight wheel in 5x100 in my price range.

Some celica's i've seen on heere look really good with 17 and 18" wheels, and if your going for a good look, it all depends on the flow of the rest of your car. but it call comes down to what you like, because hey, ur driving it. lol

from personal experience, anything 17+ will not give you a "performance upgrade" regardless of how light they are. The only acception would be the width, but for a 6th gen celica, you chouldnt be using anything over 8" width anyway, and there is a good selection of 15 and 16" wheels that go up to 8" widths. your getting that wider stance that might be needed to balance your driving style (once again, depending on the type of racing you are doing).

im building my celica for mostly the ST class in SCCA autocross, and plan to attend an HPDE or PDX event here and there, but i dont plan on being uber competitive due to the lack in parts available for the 6th gen (i.e. polyU. bushings, control arms, lower arm bars, etc.). the rules say i cant go over a 7" width, so im looking for any 15" or 16" wheel up to 7" width, preferably under 15 lbs. but with my broke college budget, i might just settle for the GTS wheels, and save money for tires and coilovers (ksports).

anyway, sorry to rant, but basically what im saying is 17+ is too much for the 6th gen performance wise. And i would have to strongly agree with what was said earlier about the manufacturer putting on a factory wheel size for a reason. safe, reliable, and well balanced with the rest of the suspension.

Thanks for the reply. Trust me the holes around me are bad!! I think that 225/55/16 is actually slightly bigger overall than a 225/45/17.

Therefore how about 225/50/17 as a compromise? Is there an actual way of finding out before buying or is it just a matter of trying?

Guys, you must have very good roads all around to use these size of tires, previous owner of my GT, who lives in Germany (great new road everywhere, no speed limit on highways) had 17" 215/40, it looked nice but I´ll kill chassis after few kms here in Czech Republic because of terrible roads :



So I´ve decided to keep original 15" rims, it´s nothing special but it´s more for performance and not just for look so I like it :




Btw: what is your approx. fuel consumption on 215 or 225 tires ?

As a rebuttal,

You can put larger rims on the car - it is the rolling diamter that influences the speedometer - yes it may be hard to get perfect, but will not be a big difference - maybe 3-5mph IF you are attempting to match original rolling diameter.

As for what it is meant for statement - once you change your springs/sprint rate that disproves your reason. With higher spring rates you are no longer in the " what it is meant to be" category if you were to keep the rims/tires stock.

As for weight the stockers are lead coffee cup coasters - many of the wheel/tire combos available are lighter than stock - though at the extreme end of the spectrum you would need seriously spending 18-19" rims to match the weight of stock - though this is also effected by rotational mass and where specifically the weight is that has the larger effect on performance, but that is a discussion for another time.

To determine rolling diameter and changes to speedo - there are several online calulators that will compare stock to the proposed wheel/rim.

As for the OP question - I am a big fan of 17s on the 6gen - all the 6gens I have seen around with decent rims (Focal/cheap crap excluded) that are 17" just seem to fit the profile/lines of the car so well. Also leaves a little meat between the road and you so ride is decent.

Sounds great. I have been looking for 215/40R17 right now, but do I need to drop it to make it look good?

(Front/Rear: 8.0" x 18" + 225/40/18 Tyres)

has this been lowered???? Im currently using 215 35 tyres on 18s but they are too small, Im liking 225 40 on the front after looking at that pic but i may try 225 45 on the rear

15-16x7= best for track use
17+= style and slight track use.

it all comes down to what you will be using it for

18x8+35 fit? or need guards rolled?
