i am wanting to put a short shifter in my 96 celica st, and i am trying to figure out which shift kit provides the shortest, best feeling shift, and is also the best looking.....any opinions?

The answers are going to vary on your question due to personal preference. I have had a TRD in my first Celica and liked it a lot, though it isn't a huge change from the OEM unit. I traded that shifter for a TWM short shifter which was great. Really short, shorter throws than the TRD, and it gave a great notchy feel to each shift.

When I bought my second Celica it had a TRD in it, so I swapped my TWM unit into it and put the TRD back in the other one.

TRD is a full shifter assembly. TWM is just the rod. Ease-wise the TRD would be better. It's four bolts, two retaining clips and two cotter-like pins. TWM requires you to open up your OEM unit and swap the rods out. I don't know what that entails because I swapped the whole assembly, so my TWM came to me assembled.

both the TRD and TWM shifters are great, its all up to how u like your shifts to feel. reasons are stated above. lol

Coming from a guy who owned a 7th gen SS and a TRD SS, I would get the 7th gen SS it had good clearance and my hand never touched the ebrake plus its cheaper, with the TRD SS my hand would hit the ebrake every time I put it in 1st or 2nd gear but with the 7th gen SS I never had that problem. I dunno why most people on this board would recommend the TRD SS if I hadn't sold mine I would've swap it back in and sold the TRD SS. The reason why I swapped out the 7th gen SS was because I got the TRD SS as a gift from my friend and I sold the 7th gen SS before I had a chance to use the TRD SS didn't know it would be worse LOL. redface.gif

have TRD... never had any problem with the e-brake... they made three different versions of the TRD... i got one of the last two remaining in the US about a year ago of the newest model... they are EXPENSIVE... the TRD is a quickshifter not a shortshifter... the height stays about the same but the shifts get shorter... its made for rally driving so a driver can shift and get their hands back to the steering wheel as fast as possible...

most SS are going to give you a notchy feel... just a note from experience

on ebay the TRD is $160 shipped with the knob, TWM is $155 shipped, and the 7th gen generic is $26 shipped.
i'm gonna go with the TRD because it comes with the nice knob and according to a lot of guys including presure2 it shifts a lot smoother.

Good choice. TRD is the best option. The whole point of a "shorter shift" is to have a shorter throw while keeping the driver's hand as close to the steering wheel as possible. Short shifters are just dumb, who wants their hand way down by the console all the time?

I loved my 7th gen ss it wasn't those really low ones but low enough that your hand can rest on the center arm rest and shift gears with no problems like it was custom built for me lol depends on your arm length I guess, I didn't notice any difference in shifting from the TRD.
