What does the noise sound like? A pop? Creak? Groan?

does it happen all of the time? under a specific speed? only when braking?

I would get a pop/clunk when I would apply the brakes. turned out that one of the two bolts that holds the rear calipers on had fallen out, and the caliper was hanging back off the rotor. a new bolt corrected this.

edit: you have an ST, so you wont have disc brakes in the rear, but that doesnt mean it couldnt be brake related. however my assumption is suspension related.

It sounds like a groan.

Could be a exaust hanger that broke and is allowing the muffler or exaust pipe to hit the under carrage.

every celica i've ever owned has had a continuous poping while driving, its annoying but nothing ever fixes it, new struts didn't fix it in my old vert. and when i put new struts/swaybar endlinks on the black one it was still there :S

If it's the struts, try searching the forum to see all the varying opinions on which struts to replace them with. There's tons of threads about suspension. smile.gif

Funny, when I needed to replace my rear struts so badly, I had the "thump thump" but not the pop you're talking about. I know which sound you're talking about though, because only AFTER I replaced my rear struts, all my springs, rear sway bar bushings and rear endlinks (twosRus FTW!) did I get that 'pop' sound. It usually only does it in the morning when the car is cold and has been sitting all night though.

I have that very same problem.. thug sound when accelerating and slowing down... not braking but slowing down. My theory is the rear strut mounts or the strut mounts are not aligned to the struts.

I actually think the same thing, that the struts are seated improperly on the rubber thingie on the mounts. It's actually not something that really stresses me out too much; I know it was all lined up when I put them in there, so it probably shifted a bit when I pushed them up into position to bolt them in.
