Update -- Haven't seen the car, no reason to. Shop had a harley to finish up for a show, and it took longer than expected. No biggie. If things went as planned I'd have a tuned Vette sitting in my garage right now instead of it being just fired on Friday the 13th. So........ oops, completely misread that. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

Given I can't get fired from one of my jobs, I would probably welcome getting canned from my pt time job. Would leave me a lot more personal time. What I was saying was that instead of having my vette just get fired up on Friday the 13th, I'd have it done and tuned sitting in my garage.

I know the feeling about getting rid of the part time job... Its startin to kick my butt... But the extra income is really nice I'm excited to see pics and stuff of what is going on! -------------------- |

I'm in the military. Can't really get fired from that (you can, but it's extremely difficult and not the best thing).

Teaser pics:
Not much has been done. New high beam is in and what we need, along with the nose and hood. $750 in parts. Headlights are modded with LDH cutoff's now, and after this weekend the car is the #1 priority in the shop. Paint chips are being done on the old hood with a few pearlcoats for our viewing pleasure this weekend, and if we don't like that then we're going to look at a candy or metallic version of the stock red. More to come! -------------------- |

More update: Handles are shaved, side markers are shaved, body work begins. He's hoping to have it primered and ready to paint by the end of next week. Here's some pics:
I fixed the SSIII splitter front mount. The fiberglass one broke in the accident, so I fabbed a new one today out of 1/8" aluminum and put it back in with rivets through the original rivet holes. Some of the car: Now the fun stuff. We're going different with the paint, but slightly. Here's what we're looking at, there are four different things going on here: Top to bottom: 1 -- Light white pearl clearcoat w/candy red 2 -- Heavy white pearl clearcoat w/candy red 3 -- Copper pearl clear on base red 4 -- Painters own mixture, DEEP red with heavy flake. 1 and 2 are OUT. The copper pearl on teh base red is INCREDIBLE. Out of the light it looks like factory red, but as soon as light hits it the copper metallic and pearl just jump out at you. EXTREMELY dynamic paint, just incredible. Downside to this color? The RED DVL licenseplate will kind of be a little lie at that point. The deep red is gorgeous, but the flakes are extremely noticeable and REALLY stick out in the light. I have a feeling it's going to look too much like a boat if we did this color. This really shows the copper pearl: This shows how deep the front red is in dimmer light: Here you can see how the right side of the copper section pretty much blends to the stock fender even though there still a bit of direct light on it: Good look at the dynamics of the two colors. The copper one really changes a lot more. The deep red, you can see how much metal flake is in it. Another comparison: One more: So what do you all think?? Right now my wife and I are kind of battling over the copper or dark red. I want copper, she wants the red but is afraid it's too girly with all the metal flake and is also torn because she likes the copper too. -------------------- |

I love the copper pearlescent, but I'm a huge fan of the deep red. But ONLY if he can dial back the lame metal flake. A little metal flake is ok; just enough to give a car that "shiny"/"wet" look, but this much looks like somebody spilt a gallon of craft glitter all over your car while the clearcoat was drying...

I think copper is best. Although I like the red as well but as kaos said there is way too much flake in it. I think the red would be better with maybe 1/4 of the flake it has in it now.

The copper and the deep red are the only two we're looking at. If we went with the deep red we would DEFINITELY be toning down the metal flake to a more standard metallic mix. Right now we're both leaning towards the copper. We've got a couple of days to mull it over though.

oh wow. thats awesome. Personally, I'd go for ..... ummm.... flip a coin.
I agree on the way too much flake part. I say the copper unless everything in your interior is colored to match the red. If you end up going with the copper, maybe you can talk him into retouching your wheels to match too. but then again, that deep red is just so powerful. I just changed my mind again, I'd go with the red with just a touch of flake. Final answer, red.... maybe -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

you could ask him ( your painter) to try a smaller flake in the deep red, or red mica pearl, to achive the same effect that he did with the copper pearl, just with the red,... its extremely subtle tho.
i like the copper, looks stunning. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

I think the idea to try the deep red with a smaller flake is a really good idea. It could look really amazing.
As it stands now, I say go for the copper. But I'd really want to compare it to the deep red with smaller metal flake in it. That big flake just looks kinda icky to me. It would probably look really cool on like a 70s Impala, but not quite right for a Celica. -------------------- |

Well......this may be all for nothing. I just got called yesterday with him saying "Oh yeah, meant to tell you, if you go with one of these customs it's going to be about $500 more." $500 that we don't have to dump into the project. He's checking into it to see if he can drive the cost down for us, but as of now it looks like it's going to be back to factory red. More to come here, I've got a PS2 and some other junk laying around to sell so I'm going to try to scrounge up the money.

The factory red looks good too though. but it's tough to go to the factory color after playing around with those other custom ones. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

I know the factory red will look good, but you hit the nail on the head. After seeing the copper metallic pearlcoat over the factory red, it's a hard pill to swallow. The biggest problem is that we ran into a semi-big problem with the vette. Either the scavenge pump or the drivers side turbo seals went out. Either way, I'm looking at $350-1000 to fix depending on if its one, the other, or both. -------------------- |
