I've been searching for a 22re 4x4 in my price range with no luck. I did however stumble upon a V6 4x4 for a mere 2500. The owner is a friend of a friend so I don't expect anything shady.

The head gasket was replaced post 100k and it currently has 180k. There's some slight corrosion on the front underneath, it's been to the beach dunes a couple times. I smelled oil burning after test-driving, and it wasn't coming from the tailpipe.

The body is in very good shape, no rust and little tiny dents. The truck ran excellent and the clutch is brand new and felt great. The tires are brand new 33 bfg's. The interior is in very good shape as well.

I plan on getting a compression test done soon, if it passes should I pull the trigger? Don't know much about the 3.slow except it's headgasket problem.

i have a 91 pickup sr5 v6. very nice truck indeed. it's slow and has no power but for hauling things around, it does a great job. if you had the headgasket replaced, next thing to replace would be tie rod ends. it had a tie rod recall so just bring it into any toyota dealership and they'll do it for free. otherwise trouble free trucks and will last a long time. mines got a little over 200k miles on it and runs like new. I would hold out for the 22re personally. or wait to find a 96+ with the 5vzfe.
I had an 89 v6 for a few months. Loved the styling, loved having a truck. had a burnt valve though (which is another thing that's common I guess) and it wasn't worth fixing it.

thanks for the input guys,

the truck already has the tierods replaced.

The 5vzfe is out of my price range, although I hear it's an awesome engine and is a direct swap to the 3.slow wink.gif . The 22re's seem to be holding their value too well, either out of my price range or beat to hell with 250k+ miles. It'll add up replacing all the small stuff on a body with that many miles. Such an awesome engine though.

yea my dad drives a 91 pickup with a 22re. there is little acceleration due to the very tall gearing but the motor and drivetrain are solid. these toyotas are known for having solid axles that are great for hauling and offroading.

That's crazy. Same motor in the 3rd gen GTS was a freaking TuRD with no power whatsoever. 22R in my 2nd gen had some go tho [not crazy but not bad for '81 either] - must be in how they geared these trannies.

I've heard that the 22REs are one of the best motors Toyota has ever built in terms of reliability and durability. Yeah, they're slow, but they just last for friggin' ever!

I had a 92 Pathfinder v6. Not sure what motor was in that... vzfe something. I forget. Also slow, but man it just went forever. Never ONCE had a single problem with that motor, and sold the car w/217k miles on it. Didn't leak, burn oil... nothin.

god I miss that car!

Sound like it is in better shape than my 87 with 22r carb and
there is no way I would sell it for 2500, so my answer is definatly yes.

These are great trucks, the 4cyl in mine is very underpowered on the highway
with 32" bfgs. Off road they are hard to beat, 4low is about perfect
in almost every situation you will encounter. I have beat the hell out of mine
over the years and it hasn't failed me yet. I have pulled out more than a few full sized
trucks with larger tires than I have.

Griffy - I'm pretty sure you meant 4runner [You've told me of it before]

x2
I often tell of the 81 I bought from my Mom who didn't know you had to change the oil in a car. This car lived 8 years of it's life in a mix of Texas and New York [Hot and cold] without an oil change. Amazing.
Funny ending to the story is it popped within 5mins of it's first oil change. Guess the OP couldn't push new thick oil through the block anymore. LOL

So the v6 had a cylinder leak, and I decided to only look for 4cyl's since.

I am looking at another truck today, 92 4x4 22re 180k miles that is immaculate inside and out. I'll spare the details (which are very good), but it has one catch.

The previous owner went through a couple headgaskets before selling this guy his truck. This guy said the cylinder head was in bad shape so he replaced it, along with all gaskets and a new timing chain w/ steel guides (says he has receipts). He owns a toyota truck business and says he will warranty the entire truck for a year (labor only) and will give written proof.

My question is will I have to worry about any other components of the engine having a compromised lifespan because of the headgasket failures.

I'm going to see this in about 6 hours and could use some advice b4 then. Thanks in advance

Travis

If he has proof that he has done the work than you should be fine. The 22re is one tuff engine and their simple to work on. They even made a 22ret! So you can buy a factory turbo setup.

There are tons of ways to gain hp from the 22re

I would look for a high milage 96+. There are a ton of upgrades to that body style not the least of which is that they pretty much solved the rusting issue. I bought a 2000 and have been very pleased. The only downside is that the seats are absolute torture devices pre-2001. I just replaced mine with some fine leather saab units.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
