I had a '96 Celica that I bought off of an older lady that barely ever listened to the radio, and the factory speakers were awesome in that car. Then I bought this GT I have now, and one of the door speakers was blown so I bought Memphis Audio Power Reference speakers. The mids and highs are great, and I never noticed a reduction in bass. Then I replaced my back speakers with some 300 watt Blitz Audio (isn't that a Wal-Mart brand?) speakers that I got for free. Everything sounded okay, but I'll leave it at that. It always lacked bass. Embarrassed to have Blitz components in my car, I put the factory rear speakers back in a couple of weeks ago, and they have MUCH better bass than either the Blitz or the Memphis Audios. Almost every Toyota I've rode in has a decent system from the factory. I think it's just the age of the speakers in our cars. I'm saving up to invest in a JL Audio sound system though

I would agree that the speakers seem to have degraded with use over time. My '94 GT had pretty awesome speakers, it was a single owner and was 100% stock. The '98 GT I have now had 4 other owners and had mediocre speakers at best (even though they were the same), they lacked bass but the tweeters were still crisp. I think it just depends on how much use they've had.
That said, I would still recommend some Kickers for a tight budget (and if you're not going to be putting them on an amp). For the price of their low to midrange ones, they have pretty good sound quality. This post has been edited by AMCMoe: Jul 5, 2009 - 9:55 AM |

our stock speakers are actually really really good... but age and wear tends to leave them sounding like garbage... they run about $200 a speaker... alpine makes some great aftermarket speakers... type s's are ok but for component step up to the type-r, just a few more bucks and well worth it... you can usually get last years model pretty cheap too I dont know, i find our factory speakers to be extremely lacking. The highs are nowhere to be found, there is no bottom end, everything in the middle lacks clarity. Clarity-wise you are correct but the damn things can take a sever beating. Way back when I used to amp the sh*t out of them and they take it well for years - guess they are just starting to show they're age a lot. I love how when you pull the speakers out of the car and turn them around to look at the back, they are 15 watt max. Lol. I've even got the factory amp in my car.

Yeah, they are low power, but really high efficiency. I'm still using the front 6 stock speakers in mine and they balance out fairly well. The rear component set and sub help fill in the missing holes. I'm contemplating upgrading some of the fronts soon.

Idk that you can get components worth buying for $50. I run Infinity Kappa Perfects and they work pretty well. I like Alpine, but youll need a solid 50w+ RMS amp for ANY component set. Theyll most likely fry over time from being under powered if you run them off of a head unit, not to mention, theyll lack bass.
I supervised an audio install bay for a while and have plenty of experience. If youve got questions, let me know. |

LOL yeah - yet I've successfully amped them to 75 watts + That's awesome. I have a 50w head unit and I never turn it up too loud, so I'm pretty sure my speakers are never getting more than 20 watts, but they hold their own. I'd have no problems with installing brand new factory speakers in my car, if they weren't so frackin' expensive. So rather than paying the dealership prices or new speakers, I'm paying to pay for all JL components, amp, and sub. Doubt if I'll be saving any money. But that's the point of this post. I'm sold on a JL sub and amp, but how are their components? Anybody on here have any experience with them? -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates.
