*** I am getting this crazy ass "clicking sound" comming from my engine (sounds like when you put penny in a plastic box and shake it fast).

CAR: 1994 Toyota Celica 1.8L DOHC (Automatic)
user posted image
-basic bolt-ons (no boost)

OK, lets start from beginning...
- 3 weeks ago I bumped the I-355 highway median (Illinois), and just made a small dent on the front left side of my car. I'm just stating this so that you are informed, I don't think that there was any internal engine damage done but I just wanna state every single detail.
- 1 week ago the "clicking sound" was sometimes heard at high RPMs (5000 RPMs and up). But this was only when I pressed hard on the gas.
- 1 day ago the "clicking sound" was heard every-single-time I was in high RPMs and it was getting louder and louder.
- LAST NIGHT the "clicking sound" was really loud and clicking fast, and eventually my car shut off. I had to try 3-4 times to start it and finaly it turned on after 20 min wait.

STEPS TAKEN:
-I got some more expensive Shell 93 Octane
-I changed oil filter and got some Castrol Syntetic oil
-I have checked the spark-plugs and wires themselves

-I have also opened the valve cover making sure that the gasket was not damaged (since I've seen some dark liquid on bottom block)

*** I have no idea whats wrong with my car, the "clicking sound" is getting louder and faster, if anyone has any tips/hints let me know!!!

thanx

1st, try to get a sample and post a link here so we can hear this....then, try to locate the source of this noise....
if it comes from the block it's probably a main or rod bearing....if coming from head it's something like knocking......does the engine vibrates?is performance decreased?
When u changed the oil have u checked for very little metal parts in the oil?
Since ur engine also stopped maybe u lost compression caused by a broken piston or rings..... frown.gif

Provide us those infos, thanks and in the while avoid to use the car, and ABSOLUTELY avoid to go over 3k- 3,5k RPMs to avoid damages.

That's a lovely car smile.gif It sounds like its lossing compression to me too. It also sounds alot like your lifters are hitting. Is your coolant flowing like it should through the block?

My car was making a loud metal on metal noise too. I never noticed it getting faster or anything like that, but when i'd hit the gas it'd make the sound. I took it to a mechanic and he said I was probably about to throw a rod. I thought it sounded more like a CLACK then anything else, but it was loud....

I've had 2 problems that created that sort of sound in the past.
The first one is the injectors 'clicking' on the current Celi I have, not very loud so I don't think it's that.
The other was a broken rocker arm which was letting the back of a valve 'tap' the valve cover. Judging by your picture it isn't that(though I'd double check all the springs just in case, and you'd notice a mark on the inside of the valve cover), but it would cause that loud 'machine gun' type sound. This happened on my old Hyundai(first car, would never own another one).

If it was a piston/ring the car probably wouldn't move at all. If it was me I'd tear the engine down untill the problem was found(could be the bearings like previously stated, or . A shop would charge a lot to diagnose something of that nature. It would probably cost less to buy a better engine than to have a shop repair it. 4AGZE for $1200 from Jarco.

Thats my solution.... 4agze baby........

Oh, and my mechanic did the diagnosis free of charge, they even steam cleaned the engine. He's a real nice guy. Where is the noise coming from???
