Driving to lunch on Friday, pulled into my apt parkin lot, engine/tranny made a loud bang, and started knocking and shaking like crazy. I shut it off, got out and found 2 bearing (pretty sure they're bearings) laying on the ground. Lots of coolant and oil was pouring out of the bottom. Got it towed to my friends house now. He's a mechanic. I'm not sure if I wanna put more $ into it, or just part it out. Car still rolls while in park .This is the 96 auto by the way.

I'll keep you posted. Erich.

Don't think the 3s swap is an option right now. Money isn't right yet. I had 150k on it tho.

Oh well, we'll see.

its time to scrap it, and get something reliable. Don't even waste your money unless you want to keep messing around with it and not have a daily driver.

if you like the car, spend the money and just get another engine. probably cheaper than getting another car

agreed.you can get a beams 3s installed for much less than 5k. which is about what you would spend on an ok car nowadays.

well, it is the cv shaft i think. got up underneath it tonight, and the passenger side where it enters the transmission is all F'ed up. i suppose thats where the 2 bearings came out. im hoping i can just replace the cv shaft and be done with it. as for warning signs, none for the cv shaft snapping. but the car has been overheating lately. so i have just been adding coolant everyday. that seems to keep the temp normal. it wasnt overheating when the bang/snap/knocking occured.

Thanks, Erich

so where'd the water come from? if you were going <2000 rpm most likely you didn't blow your engine. not enough stresses internally for it to release a rod, well not without major signs something was really wrong before hand. when the CV joint let go, it may have done so with enough force to knock a water line loose. does it start? have you even tried to start it since?

Coolant doesn't pour out because of a failed CV joint. Are you sure they were bearings? If it is all F'up on the tranny, then you will have to at least deal with that ( like a new tranny. This option is usually cheaper then fixing the existing one if you buy used). If you do the work yourself, im sure you can find a good running GT motor with tranny for < $1000. Probably get just the tranny for < $400. If the car looks good, i say fix it. If you want a new car then now is the time! Good luck either way.

the coolant came from a hose that looked like it melted. its the hose that sits right under the upper hose. looks like it melted and popped a little hole and was shooting coolant out. havent started it since it broke down. when we rolled it into the garage we could feel the cv shaft knocking around at the tranny. the bearings i believe are pieces from the cv shaft or tranny. its now low on oil so i dont want to start it till i get back out there with some oil.
if its just a cv shaft issue (75$ new) ill keep it. if it needs a new tranny ill probably sell it.
