okay... my computer got infected with this spyware and its really f-ing me up. i can't get rid of it with my yahoo anti-spy. and the spyware keeps advertising this antispy program that'll get rid of it. but of course its gonna cost an arm and a leg for me to buy their program that'll get rid of their own spyware. everytime i try to do a system restore... it says, "system restore has been turned off by group policy. to turn on system restore, contact your domain administrator." i tried system restore in safe mode but it still won't let me. help me please.

It's funny, I just actually got a virus not 2 hours ago that did the same thing. Although, disabling System Restore is a common things for viruses to do.

Try this:

1. Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC

2. Navigate to this path:

-> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
---> System
----> System Restore

3. Set Turn off System Restore to Not Configured

4. Set Turn off Configuration to Not Configured

Then try running System Restore.

If that doesn't work, try downloading something like Spybot Search and Destory and running that, or AVG.

Here is a direct link to download Spybot.

Boot to safe mode, install a program called 'Malware Bytes Anti-Malware', run a full system scan and remove the problems it finds. If that doesn't get rid of everything, install SuperAntiSpyware and do a full system scan.

edit: spybot and AVG were unsuccessful. most problems persist and still unable to perform a system restore after using those programs.

well this i what i suggest if all else fails

1. Back up all important files (make sure u run like malwarebytes on them 2 make sure their not infected)

2. Do a complete system restore ie reformat the hard drive re install windows.

3. put files back on computer

basically no way u can still have virus. unless u backed up files that were infected. most new comps have partitions so don't even gotta have windows cd.

What Operating System are you using? Vista? That command is for XP.

Ah, the joy of the fake anti-virus scam.

Don't buy it, by the way. That just gives them your credit card info.

Often you can manually disable the program which is blocking your installs -- then you need to run an effective anti-virus/spyware/malware program, such as you'll find on MalwareBytes. Find the name of the scam program and Google it, someone will have identified the necessary files to attack/delete/deregister. If it hasn't installed itself as an icon on your desktop, look for it via Task Manager.

You can get to group policy by opening a run command window and typing "mmc", then adding the group policy snap-in.

No legal way to purchase XP to go backwards and unless you beta tested or downloaded the RC of Windows 7 ( :woot: ) you wouldn't have it yet.

October 22nd is RTM (Release To Manufacturer) for Windows 7. I HIGHLY recommend it. I have W7 Ultimate and it runs on my netbook perfectly.

Right, places that still have old stock still have it, but Microsoft isn't producing it anymore.

And Windows 7 was available for presale, but unless you ordered from the presale you wouldn't have it.

And looking at fry's website they don't have XP, which means that if the stores have XP still they can't advertise that online because they're limited to stock on hand.

You more then likely cannot run GPEDIT.MSC because you are on a "Home" system. Such as Winxp Home, or Vista Home edition. They do not come with group policy editting abilities, nor are capable of a simple install either.

To solve any virus, and such issues. Its simple. Safe Mode, run Hijackthis. Remove any entries that are obviouslly not sappose to be there. I'm not going to give a step by step on what to remove, google can answer that. Once you have completed your Hijackthis, reboot. This disables them from starting back up. Return to safe mode, run malwarebytes to remove malicous software. Acquire CCleaner. Its an automated cleaner for cached files. Run that. Reboot normal. Should be fine.
