Does anyone know what all is involved in converting a 4th gen 3S-GE (American version rated at 135 HP, 125 ft/lb torque) to a 3S-GTE? I've gotten my hand on a 3S-GE out of a 1988 Celica GT-S that was rebuilt 90k miles ago and I want to convert it to a 3S-GTE. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch! biggrin.gif

what im confused? 3s-ge is 197hp, 3s-fe is 125 and 5s-fe is 135

i dont recall them putting a 3s-ge in a GT-S as the JDM version were the ss-ii and ss-iii

JDM caldina, mr2, celica, and rav4 got the 3s-ge. but no USDM models as far as i no

Despite the similar names, they are two totally different motors. You might be able to turbo the 3sge but it will still be very different from a real 3sgte. Dont let their names fool you.

That's correct - it's a first gen 3S-GE out of a 4th gen 88 Celica GT-S.

my bad i read it as 1998 GT-S tongue.gif personaly it would be more cost effective to get a Gen2 or more generous gen3 3s-gte than u spend the money to turbo the 1st gen 3s-ge and get maybe 200hp? where as a gen3 3s-gte will 250+ out of the box

well he has the 1st gen 3sge already and i think its up to him if he can resell it to get a newer 3sgte.

i suppose inorder to convert it to turbo,you have to change the piston rings and get a MAP sensor(im unsure of the map sensor) you'll have to get the exhaust manifold for the 3sgte and hook up the intercooler,change exhaust piping to 3' from stock nonturbo 2.5'.but one can only run about a maximum of 5psi boost on stock internals.im planning to do the same thing once i save up.if you want to run it on stock internals,its better to get a CT9 turbo from a 4efte engine as you wont be able to run on very high boost.its cheaper compared to getting a CT20B from a 3sgte motor.people reading this,please correct me on if i went wrong on anything.thanks. smile.gif

I would say a full rebuild of that motor since it is so old, you don't want to blow it after a week of driving under boost. If you rebuild, upgrade the internals with some forged pistons/rods. Get some pistons that will lower the compression ratio so you can handle more boost. A lot of the other stuff has been mentioned: exhaust manifold, intake, intercooler, stand alone ecu setup of some sort, access to a dyno, you'll definitely want some gauges for boost, oil pressure, EGT, etc. You'll also need to fab up most of the intake and intercooler piping. Oh and of course you'll need the turbo, whatever seems fitting to you but nothing too big.

What tranny are you using? IMO adding a limited slip diff would be an excellent idea, but could be done later. Oh and you'll definitely want to get a stronger clutch.

I'll post up if I think of anything else.

The engine was rebuilt 90k miles ago - don't know if it has forged guts - I doubt it - but it runs good and strong. Doesn't leak or smoke and doesn't burn oil. Not sure of the tranny but it's AT with the sport/cruise shift option on it. As far as the ECU is concerned can I flash the factory ECU or do I need some kind of standalon air/fuel management? Thanks for all the input. bowdown.gif

I would definitely, DEFINITELY recommend not using that old AT, and finding a 5 speed that will match up with the motor. I highly doubt you can flash the ECU and have good luck, you'll definitely come out ahead using a stand-alone.

The more I look up stuff on this conversion, I have to say I think you'll be ahead to sell the motor and swap a 3sgte. By the time you spend the money getting your motor into the shape to be able to handle any kind of power reliably, you'll be able to swap a stock 3sgte with the appropriate tranny and ecu.
