What do you guys think??
GT4 or EVO? I want to have a discussion about this without further hijacking Jim's thread from http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...1364&st=260 -------------------- Mike W

I favor the Evo, so I'll stick with that. Technology wise I would assume its better since they are newer. I'd don't know which gen Evo your referring to though. They have huge potential as long as its the 4g63, especially ones that run on E85. People have made over 400whp around here on stock motor. I haven't really looked into the 4b11. I'd love to see a gt4 in my area though, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

So stock for stock, ST205 and Evo 4 or 5 lets say (for a similar year comparison)
Pros for Evo: Evo is 200 kgs lighter they have 280BHP as opposed to 250BHP 4WD system is more advanced?? Cons for Evo: They don't seem to look as aerodynamic (maybe) FMIC not W2A? Can't run 20psi on stock head & block? What about suspension? Do they have something better than superstrut? I guess we have to talk about street application now, since TTE didn't want superstrut for rally.. Superstrut really is "the sh*t" on the street btw, you can full throttle through negative camber corners (both SS-III and GT4) which would normally understeer you off the road in a nonsuperstrut SS-I or II. there is an evoIX here in town that runs almost 900hp on e85. car runs tens looking to get into the 9's if he can figure out his first gear traction issue.
but the arguement for that car chould be tuffy's gt4, to bad he doesnt have any solid 1/4 mile times, -------------------- 2015 Subaru WRX. World Rally Blue/Black

QUOTE Cons for Evo: They don't seem to look as aerodynamic (maybe) FMIC not W2A? Can't run 20psi on stock head & block? Huh? Who told you that? Stock boost on the evo9 is around 19psi, and most people run around 22psi. You can also reflash the stock ecu with a 50$ usb cable and open source software and have a fully tunable ecu that can run any size injector you want. Add alcohol injection and you can retune the car to make 400whp on the stock turbo. The car also stops on a dime with those massive brembo brakes, and the handling is incredible. Seriously, any car can be made to be great, but out of the box, the evo is an all round better car. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I think he is talking about the evo 4's and 5's...which would make sense because they aren't running no where near 19psi stock. If you want my oppinion in comparing an evo 5 to a gt-4 i couldnt really give you an honest oppinion because i have not drivin in either, however i will tell you this. The celica/st165,185,or 205's were very ahead of their time in the sense that they laid down really good power with the potential to pull a lot more out of them and still run reliably. Comparing my st185 swap to a new evo 8,9,or 10 for that matter, i would still take a swaped celica over one anyday. The insides look and feel cheap, the body style is just OK, and the power can be matched very easily with a 3s-gte engine. You can do more simple mods to a 3sgte platform and pull more power out of it then you can a 4G63 without cracking the block and doing internal work and/or head work. They are a very under estimated engine and not a very well know engine either, but i can tell you this, the aftermarket support, just over the past year or 2 for the 3sgte has blown up, and a lot more/different parts are now aviable. As for the interior and the visual looks of either car, i love the inside of my celica, next to srt-4 seats my leather celica seats are probably the most comfortable seat i have sat in in a car. The outside, when done correctly on either car can look very good or very bad, so thats up to you on how you want to mod it. All in all, car for car, id still take a celica for these 3 reasons. 1) cheaper 2) Faster 3) Nicer my last point is this...i have ran 2 different evo's both on a closed airport road...1 was a stock evo 9...i was at his back bumper when i mashed it and when i got to about his door he jumped on the evo, we were both in 2nd gear, i pulled hard to about a fender infront of him and then i slowly walked away from him....the second evo was an evo 8 with a few mods done, 24psi, full turbo back exhaust, intake, front mount, and a few other things i cant remember off the top of my head...we went from about a 60 roll...from 60 to about 120 he pulled me but not as hard as i thought he was going to...keep in mind i have nothing done to my car other then a front mount and a 3" open DP...my car was running at about 12psi... 3S-GTE FTW -------------------- I"M NOT A TOYOTA FAN, IM A FANATIC 1984 accord hatch 5 speed (T-Belt)-Junkyard 1991 VDUB jetta wolfsburg Ed. 5 speed (clutch)-junkyard 1988 Dodge Aries K (sold) 1969 Chevy El camino - Traded for celica 1991 Dodge Daytona-Traded for Celica 1988 Chevy Camaro-Work in Progress 1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 - For Sale 1995 Toyota Celica-Work in Progress |

I think a GT-4 is a little closer to all of our hearts...stateside, I'd obviously have to go for an Evo since a GT-4 isn't viable. But Celica styling > ANY gen Evo.

I think a stock 1990-1992 6-bolt 4g63 could hold a bit more power than a stock 3sgte. They have made up to 500whp on stock motor. How reliable it is, I don't know. I know they are really pushing the limits though. Also tuning for a 4g63 I think is better because there are more option such as dsm link v3. On then other hand I'm bias because I own 4g63.

Both cars are pretty evenly matched. a better comparison would be models from the same year. st205 was up to 99, then the caldina. I'm not sure on the evo production years, but you see what I'm saying.

anyway back on topic...gt-4 94-99 > evo X While I agree that I would rather own a real gt4 more than an evoX if given a chance, the evoX gains 100hp/tq with just simple intake and exhaust upgrades to make somewhere around 330hp at the wheels with just bolt ons. It also has one of the best intelligent awd systems around in a car that price range. So technically, I'd say the evoX wins. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

One of the guys discussing in Jims thread (I linked in the 1st post) explained how Evo guys like to talk **** about GT4 and it reminded me how people talk sh*t about my ride trying to tell me a stock Evo would waste it and that noone ever sees a GT4 at the drag strip for a reason.
It always makes me wonder just how fast these Evos really are? I know my ST205 is alot quicker than my old ST202, but still I know any large engined turbo car will waste it. So just how much extra juice could Mitsubishi really get out of its identical displacement? Now I know for a fact after closely watching 3S-GTE threads in these forums that with an FCD I can safely crank 20PSI with a squirt of water, since I've had it this whole time on 18psi, there's still no play in my shaft and the engine is still running as it should, no sign of oil contamination even after 4900kms (I'm due for a change, 3s-gte oil change is every 5000kms and not 10000kms like 3sge) -------------------- Mike W

And obviously we can't compare the new millennium models of Evo that's just not fair.... Otherwise you would have to compare the Evo to a panasonic toyota F1 car

I'm not near as informed about cars as I used to be, but I completely agree with Lagos on this one.
I would personally prefer a GT-4 just because of it's rarety, awesome looks, and what it means to us on this forum. But the EVO's have long been established as one of the optimum tuner cars. I don't know the numbers, but I test drove one a few weeks ago and was honestly amazed. I've ridden in a turbo MKIV supra, and that was awesome, but the handling and quick spool-up of the EVO turbo made it an absolute pant-wetting drive. Of course, as was mentioned, we have to compare an EVO 5 or 6, and I haven't driven one that old, but I'd still venture to guess it could out-perform a GT4. -------------------- |

Resurrecting this little thread here. Out of curiosity.. Is it at all possible to take an affordable model of evo (such as evo 9) and make it look like a celica? I have seen miracles done to pontiac fiero frame to make replica cars of different makes. I wonder if after significant modification similar thing could be done to an evo with a few engine upgrades. Imagine pulling up to some chump driving an evo 9 and smoking the hell out of him (on a closed road of course).
