Too futuristic? I couldn't disagree more. It looks right on par with the current trend of imports. Interior is classic concept: extravagant & a tech overkill, but its a concept. Exterior looks fine for a production car.
I will also disagree on that horsepower expectation. Anything sub 200 will absolutely kill any hope of this car selling. It certainly looks the part of a 370z/Genesis coupe competitor - and this is an opportunity for Toyota to take that market. Even if they plopped in an old EJ20 it'd be 224hp. Although Hyundai is making great strides in quality and increasing its brand respectability, people are still going to think twice about plopping down 35k on a V6 Genesis coupe. It's already in Gran Turismo: http://jalopnik.com/5375363/video-toyota-f...in-gran-turismo -------------------- |

But that's assuming they're gonna go turbo. Speculations so far... and considering Toyota is emphasizing on weight reduction... I don't see them going turbo. I would not be surprised to see it with the n/a 2.5 in the US and n/a 2.0 elsewhere. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Granted, it would have to be turbo. But I still say if it's less than 200hp (IMO 225 is the magic number) it won't sell. Toyota will want 25k for a sub 200hp car because it's a sporty Toyota - and nobody will buy it, and they'll say 'oh see nobody wants sports cars so we're not going to sell them'.
I can see this doing well if it has a starting price around 19k, and has 200hp low end model, and a turbo 2.5 with ~275 for 25k. I think it'd be perfect if there was a 225 n/a model and 300hp turbo model, but we all know that's in fantasy land. I have no idea what that c-45 boxer engine is underneath the hood in that Gran Tourismo video.
What is this going to compete against? Civic, Tibberon, Focus, Cobalt or 370Z, Genesis, Camaro, Mustang My guess based on the physical size and price point mentioned in the OP is that it will be the Civic/Tibberon. That will basicly make it an 8th gen Celica. It'll be nowhere near the 370Z/Genesis crowd unless you can squeeze close to 300 hp out of it. And I doubt that it will be intended for that. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

*Tiburon
I think 225 for 25k sounds fantastic. But like I mentioned, it's more the handling I'm worried about...they have potential to make it a fantastic chassis with that FR setup, especially if they do something like an FMR. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

I'd rock it. I can probably already tell you where in the price range it's going to sit - right around 30k. It'd be a direct competitor to the 370Z and the Hyundai Genesis. I 100% agree with you. I am not sure about the price, but most certainly about the competition. Regardless though, I may have to cross out the Supra on my list for one of these in the near future. I'm just glad Toyota is making this. And everything seems promising. They also mentioned its going to be around $21k USD which is pretty cheap. The looks have to grow on me but I think if they tweek it a bit more it'll look good.
Right now the Genesis is the only new car I would consider buying and this looks like a straight competitor with that, and with Toyota/Subaru behind it, I think it'll be alot better. And there is no way they would only give it 200hp. Even the CIVIC SI has that much today. I think we'll get alot more than that. |

You know.. before all we heard were rumors and all we saw were renderings by various magazines and somehow 2011 was not that bad of a date to release this puppy. Now that there actually IS a working concept I would have to say that I am quite disappointed because late 2011 seems ohh so far away... almost 2 years as if we have that much patience. I would be a lot more comfortable if this went for sale in early summer or late spring of 2010.

Motor Trend has some juicy bits of info on page 2 engine is a Subaru Legacy 2.0L with a re-worked Toyota head. Exterior Dimensions of 164 in. long, 69 in. wide and 50 in. in height, with a 101-in. wheelbase. Vs a 6gc liftback 174.2 in. long, 68.9 in. wide and 50.8 in. in height, with a 99.9-in. wheelbase. With similar dimensions, and similar displacements, It would be safe to say that this should weight about the same as ours. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold
