i have seen some speedos in KMS recently. wondering if anyone knows who and what is

the 300KM speedo non (st205) with 9 rpm redline

the 180km Speedo with 9 rpm redline

i know the st205 has max of 180 and 9 rpm redline

I just looked at mine, gt USDM and the max in km is 240km so what is the deal?

the beams is 180

why the whole mess?

i think the only odd one out here is the 300km/h TRD one, it was some kinda special option/upgrade.

I think the only reason we have 240km/h on ours is cause ours goes up to 150 mph? and they may have thought that stopping the kmh at 180 would look silly? lol

to be honest we know the 4 is capable of way more than 180kph, i think thats like 120mph... dont know why they stopped there, and toyota knows the 5s couldn't touch 150mph, so i have no clue why we got that either. kindasad.gif some things will never make sense...

Maybe they want us with the slow engine to think we can go fast, and those with the fast engine to think they can only go slow?! laugh.gif

^ 180 is a touch under 120; 200 is roughly 120, to be exact.

And as a side note, I thought the redline was where the red line actually starts, if you know what I'm saying...you mention a 9k redline up there.

what's funny is how some gtfours come with a 280km/h gauge stock.. then there's a 300 km/h trd version that costs a few hundreds more.

EDIT: Got my facts wrong! Anyway... I just found out in Kevstir's thread the other day that the UK spec GT's with the 3S-GE have a 180 mph speedo, where our crappy 5S GT's only have a 150 mph speedo. I know there's a difference in power, but it seems to me that a 150 mph speedo would have sufficed in the UK spec GT's, and I know my car would LOVE a 180 mph speedo.

Lol. No. Not even close. I just meant that it would look awesome to have a 180 mph speedo in my car. I was also kind of alluding that it would have been more cost-effective to go with one speedometer in both cars, which is probably why the 6gc was "overpriced" at the time. Mine was 22K brand new, has everything but leather and the alarm system. I can't say that's a bad price at all. See what a comparably equipped tC will cost, then say the 6gc is overpriced.

all the speedos interpet the signal from the speed sensor on the tranny.

the kph speedos count the mileage counter in kms and the mph ones count the mileage counter in miles.

the rpms dials are basically the same (except for the beams). Some engines are just higher reving like the 3sge/3sgtes and the 7a/5s have a lower rev limit. If you put a 9k rpm dial in your cluster nothing changes, your redline is still where it was.

If you put a km speedo in your cluster the mileage counter will not count miles, it'll count kms. Other than that the needle will still move and you still go the same speed as before.

most (if not all) JDM celica speedos are 180 kpm max and non JDM ones are listed higher. The reason being that in Japan it's law that the car cannot go above 180kph (112mph) from the manufactuer. The US and many other countries don't have this law.

Well yeah, but you can't compare '98 price to today's...but I'm not sure what it would be after inflation.

I'm pretty sure mine was a little above 18 grand...which I think is pretty expensive for a car with not very many amenities...however, I'm not complaining. There's nothing I really miss.

from looking at that guage cluster 3rd gen 3S-GE SS-II or SS-III 94-97 (Non- BEAMS) with a TRD speedo

Batman your right about those JDM facts (all should have 180km/h on them unless they say NISMO, TRD or something like that) also has speed cut around 180km/h which is controlled by the ECU (so apperenlty swapping the speedo over wont get rid of the speed cut)

On a side note there was also a "gentlemans agreement" about not passing a specfic HP rating, dont know if that still exists or not?

The 300km/h unit is the TRD Japan item (Aka for race use only), they have a part number for it but it's discontinued.

All JDM cars have a 180km/h speed limiter built into the ECU (As by Japanese law) hence theres no point in having anything over 180.

In the UK the posted speed limits are in Miles per hour, When UK people import JDM cars, they use a speed converter (Clicks divided by 1.6) and place a sticker reading "MPH" over the original dial which says km/h. (This also has the effect of raising the speed limiter from 180km/h to 180mph.)

The export Celica model (destined for markets outside of Japan where there is no 180km/h law) reads 240km/h on the speedo.

the ss-III with beams can hit 147 mph... that pretty much uses up the whole speedometer doesnt it

and gt-four can hit 155 mph??

Don't know, Look on youtube, I don't do things to lose my license and impound my cars!

From what I've seen on youtube the needle can go past 180km/h

its really just a gauge cluster upgrade or option, the sensors will read it the same way it always has. Nothing changes.

The rpm gauge on the ST has a longer red line area than the GT (USDM models). Then you look at the JDM spec Rpm gauges they are the same as the ST (At200).

Very rare car this, I believe it's 1 of 5 in the country maybe?

for some reason the hand brake indicator says BRAKE instead of the usual (!) symbol
