Hey guys, i know this i my first post here on 6gc, but i've been lurkin for a while since i got my ST a few months ago. i never really posted because i know what to expect from cars and how to repair the small things like blinker fluid and muffler bearings. But as of now I seem to be having a little problem. Let me start from the beginning......

Two weeks ago monday, after a nice little hot tub session at like 2am, i come out to my car and realizie that my car was broken into and now there is glass everywhere in my car, laptop and cell gone, I was fine with that because the car was still driveable and the junkyard was down the road. so went to the yard picked up the window the next day and installed it there, no big. That wednesday just drivin along, this girl crosses the road infront of me and i slam the brakes. Sitting at idle for about 10sec after the car justs dies. Motor shuts down the power goes out and i cant get her started. I finnally get out and check the cables and get power again but the car wont turn over and start, i mean the starter was workin the block was turning but still nothing. So i push her to the side of the road and wait a few min and she fires up. Im only like 100 yards to the apartment entrance so i continue to pull in but as soon as i hit the brakes the motor dies and i have to coast into a parking spot.

A few friends come out and they tell me thats its my timing belt and im like, no, it cant be cause the block is turning. so i go through and start replacing everything that i can think of and it still wouldnt fire over.

Things i've replace:
1 fuel pump
2 fuel filter
3 spark plugs
4 starter (bonus: picked up a revolution exhaust at the same time cause the guy at the yard said just keep it)
5 intake (cause i hate stock)
6 distributer cap
7 distributer rotor
8 coil pack (pulled from a five speed, but i have an auto)
9 efi relay
10 two other random relays (the pink ones in the fuse box, both were blown)

Just to find out 4 days later that my timing belt really was missing some teeth. Dammit all to hell. so replaced the timing belt and the car fired up.

now heres my problem, after all of this my car was running fine except one thing that i thought was annoying. my car now wouldn't shift right, it would either shift early or shift at red line, or just chill in third at 4000rpms doing 70mph. But after my car warmed up it shifted correctly. but today i was driving to lunch and it did the whole 3rd gear thing again while driving down the highway and then...... rpms down to 0 motor dead but electronics still working so i was able to use my signals to move over. as i popped my hood and look directly at the timing belt all i see is smoke coming from the timing cover.

I need opinions, cause this is my only mode of transportation and i cant loose any more days of work over this stupid timing belt. so what do you guys think caused it.

Hmmmm... Well I have the fortune to own an auto as well. Im assuming by "3ed gear" hes referring to drive. I dunno, maybe in a ST without overdrive on it might get to 4k. If I had just changed my belt and got smoke from the timing belt area thats where I would first start to check. Dont suppose your closer to DFW than central tx?

Damn muffler bearings and blinker fluid can't say that I've had to service mine yet.

yeah its third aka drive, and it kinda like drivin with the o/d off. that little button on the side of the shift lever, but the button was turned on. But it was 4k because i remember makin a comment about it while drivin and the guy in my car was saying, " yeah shouldn't that be at like 2.5k or something?"

Air Con Pump?

but what could cause the belt to start smokin like that? and if it was either the p/s, w/p, a/c, or even the alternator. wouldn't those belts go first since i just put on a brand new timing belt and kept all of the other belts the same?

No, I'm pretty sure he does mean 3rd gear. The auto revs a lot lower than the manual. I'm at 3k at 70, so 4k in 3rd is possible, although a bit of a stretch.

maybe it was 80mph, but still, 4k is really high. point is why would my car not shift and then shortly after drop to 0rpms and have a smoking timing belt?

I've never had this problem in my celicas, but one time it happend in my del sol, my best bet would be the alternator. i would say it needs replaced or have yours rebuilt.. when you hit the brakes the battery dies from what i'm getting from your predicument. . i could be wrong, but thats my best bet. hope it helps.
