The car is making a grinding noise and it feels like the handbrake is half on.

When it's parked up a slope and the handbrake is released there's a 'clonk' when setting off and it grinds whilst driving.

The normal brakes seem to be working as they should.

Is it just a case of replacing the brake shoes?

Do you have drums? Only asking cause here in the states the ST have drums in the rear. It may be your e-brake cable might have torn and they are stuck applied so they are grinding. Doubt they seized. If they grind when you use your brakes then you might need new shoes indeed.

Thanks for the reply,

It has discs all-round. It does make a slight grinding noise when you pull the handbrake slightly whilst driving.

Emergency brakes on the Celica used a drum-in-disc setup for those cars with all-wheel disc brakes. It would be advisable to pull your brakes apart to see if you can find anything wrong (loose shoes, broken springs, excessive wear, etc).

Thanks,

I'll have to have a look in a bit. If it EVER stops raining.......

My BMW has discs all-round and shoes in the 'drum' and they were fairly easy to take apart so fingers crossed these are the same..

Just taken one side apart and the shoes seem pretty worn.

I'll get some tomorrow and hope for the best. smile.gif

Keep in mind the Celica's shoes start out at 2mm thick.

Well, fitted the new shoes today to find out that the discs didn't fit back on.

Corrosion build up inside the discs so needed cleaning up.

Everything seem ok now so she can have it back tomorrow.

Thanks for your help people. smile.gif
