found the oil leak that I was looking for, was coming from the oil pump o ring on the flange with the oil pump cam seal...so I fixed that
put the timing belt back on, covers, accessory belts on and stuff, went for a start and it just cranks over without ever starting. the crank is pretty strong, so I don't think its the battery. if I press in the gas while cranking, I can hear it put'ing alittle. there was some gas on the spark plugs but I don't think that would be the problem..or would it? any pointers where I could back track? I have thursday open to take it back apart to re-check/set the timing but I'm not sure what else I could look at. |

Could be timing. Did you make sure your crank was set at TDC?

hmm....I wonder if i'm off 1 tooth then. I tried to turn the distributer...but it looks like it doesn't turn?
to shoot the timing after with my light, are then any specific pins I have to jump? I wish there was an online toyota manual...everywhere i've been to doesn't have anything for 6gc's |

'98 means the distributor isn't able to turn. OBDII.

If you were off a tooth the car should crank over and run like crap but still run. I assume the car ran decent before you did the timing belt?

I'd take the belt cover off and just turn the crank so it's tdc to see how far you are off.

yeah, I pulled the distributor because I wasn't getting an spark and found it was leaking oil internally, so replaced that and still no spark..
i'll open up the timing belt side again in the morning and see. |

no alarm or any other mod of that type. I ended up sleeping all day and woke up when it was dark...I'll open it up tomorrow after work, pull the crank sensor and clean that as well..
had a bit of oil in the electrical connectors |

Sounds good man, hopefully the connections were just dirty with oil or something little like that.

the problem was the timing...it was almost a full stroke off...it was a bit hard to start at first, but after that it was a perfect 10 @ 750. Just setting the cam sproket to TDC is the tricky part...
now to continue with the EGR recirc flow insuff...startig to think the ECU is at fault. |

Lucky for you, the engine is not an over-lap design (where the valves will hit the piston if the timing is off). The old 20R (77 Celica's were an over-lap design) I bent five (5) valves when I did'nt get the timing 100% correct. It puffed an ----ed a couple times and that was it. I was working on an exhaust coolant leak at the exhaust valve guide (20R's were notorious for that) outside in the middle of winter in a snowstorm. Boy, was I ticked off.
P.S. make sure you get the belt tensioner set right. |
