no problem man, thats why i made this thread, and tried to make it pretty detailed, with lots of pics ect, so that others could learn from my experiences, both good and bad.
if your planning for less than 4-500whp then the early blocks are fine, especially if your planning a full rebuild.
just be sure to tell your machinist that your planning on running a metal headgasket so that he can properly prep the surfaces.

ARP dont make any hardware for the 5s, but you can use 3sgte headstuds, you just need to grind 2 down to make room for the slave gears for the cams.

will, yea, i talked about doing that a while back with the TQ damper, at some point in the future ill fab somthing up.

ravin, the empty hole you showed is a bolt hole thats normally where a bracket for the water bypass lines goes.

I'm trying to figure out how to do the tuning and all that. If i want to stay and keep low boost would a SAFC 2, BTM and wideband be good? Would Emanage blue and wideband be a better choice? I read that pressure was using emanage ultimate, how did that go? I just want a basic setup and was thinking if SAFC 2 and wideband was good enough, i would just stick with that choice. I just don't want the car to fail on me when boosting. Any help would be great. Thanks.

no need for the btm.
the SAFCII works well enough, especially for someone who is just learning to tune.

OK, cool..so just the SAFC 2 and wideband would be good enough for my setup. Thanks pressure.

ok so its been a few months since my last update.

we've been driving the car, since the rebuild, and its slowly started smoking again. it has gotten steadily worse over the past few months, so a couple nights ago, i went out to the garage, and did a compression test.

i got 140 - ~100 - 140 - 140.

so, cylinder 2 is hurt this time.

the idle has been extremely erratic lately, but i think that is an ISC valve issue, im gonna try and go mess with that today.

the car still runs and drives well, it just smokes pretty good after boosting, or when you stay cruising at one speed for a while, when you let off the gas, then go back on it, it smokes..or if you just let it idle for awhile it will start smoking after a bit.
i wish there was an easy way to tell if some of the smoke is being caused by the turbo, without pulling it off. after all, it does have 50+K miles on it.

anyway, i think at this point what we are gonna do is just keep driving the car, and come ~febuary(tax time), just swap it out for a 3rd gen 3sgte.

i just dont feel its worth it at this point to take the project to the next level.
cost wise, i really just cannot afford to have another motor built ,( i wouldnt wanna build one with forged parts and hope i did it right) and buy the proper EMS to avoid having to tune around the 5s ecu anymore.
just those 2 items would run me upwards of 4k, then i would have to have it properly tuned. (i can hack tune a 5s ecu with a piggyback pretty ok, but tuning a full standalone with no base map is a whole other level that i really dont have a clue about...lol)
the 5s can be a great turbo platform, it just takes decent tuning, and restraint to last a good long time. the more you crank up the boost, the closer you are to trouble, and the more likely you are to have problems.
if your looking to make big power, your best investment will be standalone EMS, and a good tuner. IMO the biggest hurdle to overcome with the 5s is the stock ECU. once you take that out of the loop, big power is just the right turbo, and a set of forged pistons away.

sad to see you are gonna give up on this, but it is understandable why.

Still this remains one of the most epic builds on the site! thumbsup.gif

I just saw this thread. Sorry to hear about what happened bro! At least you learned a ton in the process and opened new doors for the 5sfTe guys. Its still a viable option for most people on this site who want a bit more power over stock.

No refunds on that 5s, you know.. you're totally out of warranty! lol

thanks art, i definetly have learned tons. its been a fun experience, and i think i helped to dispel some of the myths about the 5sfe from back in the day..lol
hell, warranty? i made out like a bandit getting the motor and lift from you!! just think of all the crazy crap we've seen and done since back in the day when we were standing in that garage you used, pulling the motor out of your clip...lol good times.
i definetly think the 5sfte is a great option for the guys who want ~250 or so whp, and dont want to swap. knowing what i know now, i could do it pretty cheaply, and still be solid daily driver.

i took the IAC apart, it's still clean, and moves freely, so thats not whats causing the erratic idle at times.
jenn is still driving the car back and forth to work ect everyday.
i still beat the crap out of it on the weekends laugh.gif it still hauls ass.. biggrin.gif

Hows your vac?
When my friends 3s blew on the dyno his idle was crappy and his vac was really low. Turned out to be a chipped valve. but in his case he had ZERO compression.

We'll have to do another swap some day. Just for old times sake! smile.gif

if you broke a ring land you are tearing up thay cylinder. the block might be salvageable right now, but it wont be for long. whatever you decide dont get rid of the car...its too pretty.
