I've been thinking about the limited edition anniversary ST. Ive never seen a limited edition GT. If im right why would toyota make the ST the limited edition model, when the gt is the top model? What are your thoughts.

This might have been brought up before but i couldn't seem to find it if so a moderater can deleate this topic.

The ST sold like crap, so in 97 they made some limited edition ST hatchbacks to try and boost sales.

That didn't work, so they axed the ST line.

They only made the ST a limited edition to boost sales because they couldn't get them off dealer lots (underpowered, way overpriced). I remember reading this somewhere.

I think some of them came with leather seats and a sun roof which F-ed up the price some more.

Also there weren't any "limited edition anniversary" celicas. You're confusing two different things - the 25th Anniversary Edition in 96, and the Limited Edition in 97.

Yeah, 1996 is the 25th anniversary since the first celica had rolled off the production line... I think this goes back as far as the T chassis goes?

Also in Japan it was the SS-I (lowest model) that got marked the special edition, I think its the same deal in the USA, But its a Base model with Sunroof, Celica printed on the seats, and in other places.

I've seen one of these SS-I's, it had no spoiler and no holes in the boot, the rear Celica badge was the cursive type in gold as with the front and rear Toyota emblems, just standard 15" Toyota alloys, facelift bumper, no splitters or sideskirts, had facelift foglights, facelift tails, sunroof, celica printed on the seats, the particular one I saw was 3L2 renaissance red, automatic, 3s-fe.

Wikipedia tells me in Japan there was a SS-III Special Edition aswell as the SS-I, but I've never seen a 25th Anniversary SS-III (aka Special Edition).

I had a 1996 SS-III and it wasnt one of them, I've also seen many other 1996 SS-III's and none of them were it.

Limited Edition does not equate to Anniversary Edition. Anniversary Edition was 1996, Limited Edition was 97. LE was for the ST; however I do believe there were Anniversary Edition GTs. You worked on an Anniversary Edition, not an LE. That, or you worked on a car with screwy badges.

the guy said he'd restored it himself. just couldn't get the quarter glasses to work. (that's what i did) so maybe 2nd option. he had LIMITED EDITION and the dragon badges. (i was gunna pop em off & pocket em when he wasn't looking, but he watched me carefully laugh.gif )

But it was a 97 vert... that's why i'm wondering...

mine is a 25th anniversary, but doesn't look like there was a whole lot special about it. yeah it came with different upholstered seats with celica embroidered on the seat backs. it also has 25th anniversary embroidered on the floormats, a 25th anniversary badge on the fenders, and a little plaque that says 25th anniversary and the number of the car where the rearview mirror mounts up to the ceiling. not sure if its the same on all the others, but the emblems on the back are black on a black car. thats pretty much it.
