hey y'all. i was wondering if anyone knew how to remove the auto shift knob in an automatic? (yes... an automatic! lol.) i've been struggling with it. I have already removed both screws that are located on the front of the knob and have taken the center console off but have had no luck. The shift knob just slides up and down but it won't come completely off. I'm afraid that If I pull on it too hard, it'll break or that I will damage something. I've also googled this topic but have had no luck so i'm turning to the 6gc community. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have to remove the Overdrive switch wiring somehow. Most people cut it. I never found a way to take it off without cutting wires =_=

You have to remove the Overdrive switch wiring somehow. Most people cut it. I never found a way to take it off without cutting wires =_= I guess im gonna have to cut it then... which was not what I was hoping to do! ok. Thanks solidxsnake! Come on bro! first remove the 2 screws in the back then pull the s%$t! out of it. It'll come off. |

i never had to remove auto stick but have you tried the following?
Pulling entire thing up and pressing overdrive and gear shift buttons? I am fairly certain there is a spring behind both and if there is a slight pressure from underneath you might be able to just slide it out like that. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

The overdrive button will come out (as in, pull from the stick), but the wires are soldered onto it from there. You are definitely NOT mistaken. You do have to pull down the edge of the carpet from under where the console normally sits, unbolt the four (12mm?) bolts that hold down the shifter assembly, and then unclick the small blue plastic connector housing that has two small blue and two small green wires coming out of it towards the rear. Then you can either unpin the two blue wires or cut them so that you can pull the shifter knob up and out, taking the two blue little wires up through the top of the black round sleeve that sits just aft of the metal shifter rod.
Once you have that done, you can replace the shifter cover plate under the shifter panel (the one that has P, R, N, D, 1,2) and then insert the two small blue wires back into that black sleeve and down under the entire assembly. Then route those two little wires back towards the blue plastic connector and either press the two pins back into it or solder the wires back on if you cut them. If you want to unpin the two little blue wires you have to pull off the small white square locking pin that is on the side of the blue plastic connector and then use the proper tool to unpin the wires. Crazy that it takes that much disassembly just to replace that little shifter cover plate, but that's what it takes. If I could figure out how to post photos, I could post a photo of the broken shifter cover plate and a replacement I made with some ABS material from Amazon. Regards, Maurice. |
