I dont know where you live or where you get your sources from but last time I heard toyota does not have a single sports car on its lineup nor will have one in next 5-10 years.

The FT-86 will be a pathetic shadow of its concept car, likely geared to people like myself... out of college and working.. something with enough horse power to drive me to grocery store and back but give like 89999 miles to a tank.

Subaru's version will be a pathetic shadow of its concept car because they can not afford to make it competitive to wrx. wrx sells like hot potatoes and at most they will do something like toyota on their corolla/matrix project.

But... leaving that aside. 14 years of racing innovation does a thing or two to the car industry. Yes my car can go fast in a straight line (providing its engine swapped) and yes if I had a gt-4 it would be equally competitive but a 16 year old car is a 16 year old car with 16 year old car problems. You may be just as fast as 2008 sti or 2008 evo x but they can have same amount of fun with less problems, more comfort and look presentable when pulled up to a parking lot full of corporate beemers and mercedes.

I can not advocate you to love one or the other but think of it as... evolution of motor sports. Unlike lets say mitsubishi lancers we dont have gt-4 1 gt4-2 gt4-3 gt4-4.... gt4-10... we dont. We got shafted with each celica being different in every way, aspect and direction that toyota went to. Aside from overseas gt-4 usa got shafted even in that department.

My next car is evo x gsr with no ifs buts or ands... but I will love it just as much as my celica... except that I will be able to tickle my now young adult needs and desires whereby boy racers will still be happy driving celicas.

At some point in your life there will come a time when you will have to say good bye to your celi. At which point above and beyond ... an evo or a wrx will be a worthy substitute with room to spare

I think we need to give 6gtfour a break. I think he is simply asking for a better compromised when modifying cars. Pretty much everyone who mods there own cars; attempts to squeeze the most peformance for their money and opt for the most extreme option. An example is the common modification every gt4 owner does; the 3" straight exhaust which leads to great turbo spool time but makes the car extreme loud. From what i can understand 6gtfour doesn't see this as worth the sacrifice to make the car faster.

But to anyone who has not seen the top gear challenge where they modify a Avantime to beat and evo. You realize how helpless it is to modifying cars and the amount of money wasted.

super duper off topic. 2 of my friends has that car. There 700 dollar a set of tires like 20k miles.

If you want more power, better torque and all the added technologies of vvti, look no further than the 3.5L V6 2GR-FE motor that is in the Lexus ES350, Avalon, and Camry (just to name a few cars). As tested on an mr2, the motor puts out 291whp and 245lbs of torque with only a fidanza flywheel, headers, exhaust and a 3" intake all while being naturally aspirated (and the motor weighs 100 lbs less than the 3sgte motor). It also bolts right up to an e153 transmission which is almost identical to the e154 except it doesn't have the awd parts. The engine also gets about 30 to 35 highway mpg when you drive it like a human being. So if you need an affordable solution to your need for more power, you have a good solution, all you have to fabricate are motor mounts for the Celica. And if you decide to build the motor with forged rods and pistons, add an appropriate sized turbo, and a standalone ecu there really wont be many if any vehicles that can keep up with the car.

for those who use their st205 daily, the 2gr-fe will serve as a better motor stock for stock assuming it produces more torque below 3000 rpms (for regular driving, not racing) than the 3S. when i drove a gt-four, it felt heavy as if i had someone sitting in the back seat, and the lack of power in the lower revs before boost (2L vs. 2.2L) with larger gear ratios made acceleration from a stop unpleasant. i figure a 2grfe motor swap will somewhat help relieve that issue. i'm surprised at the fact it is 100 lbs lighter than the 3S if what you say is true.. wow.

so just to summarize:

power: 2grfe > 3sgte
weight: 2grfe > 3sgte
fuel economy: ? (i assume the 2grfe offers better technology improving overall efficiency but larger engines use more fuel at a given rpm. but also turbocharged engines generally use less fuel at a specific power rating than NA motors.)
emissions: 2grfe > 3sgte (no smog issue with 2grfe)
reliability: 2grfe > 3sgte (due to no turbo, and a newer engine)
maintenance: ? i assume 2grfe > 3sgte (turbo requires frequent oil changes and in case of failure hardware is very expensive. the 2grfe just has extra cylinders requiring more plugs/wires thats it)
ease of power mods (in terms of cost): 3sgte > 2grfe (because of the turbocharger and aftermarket support)

it's just a matter of time for someone to swap in one of these babies.. i truly don't think it's it's difficult at all but will require money/time/skill to make it happen.

since when? You might think that but those corporate beemers and mercedes owners most likely do not. Like they usually say, "it's just a japanese car"

I understand the purpose of this thread, but this comment I do not.

I have a love for celicas, and pretty much only the 6th generation ones...does this mean at one point I will never purchase another vehicle? No it does not, I will purchase a vehicle that fits my needs, but it also does not mean I will just throw out what I've put my heart and soul into, because the options that come with new vehicles are not present.

I certainly want more power, and will acquire it in due time with my celica...

What I don't understand is...if i keep my celica..i'm a boy racer?

Tickle away with what floats your boat, but please don't sink our boat...as I would say not everyone can agree with that closed-minded comment.

i drive it because it's a celica. like all celicas, they're noisy and i dont expect much out of it. i have my is300 for comfort and luxury. my echo and corolla for awesome mpg. you guys should be lucky ya'll can get your hands on the gt-four. ill be fine with the 5sfe until a swap wink.gif

I have to say when i read the first post, what a load of crap. I don't particularly care where toyota is going, it would be great if the supra and celica came back out but is it really going to affect my life that much? I can't afford a nissan gtr for one, 90's jap cars are cars you pick up for a few thousand quid and end up spending a bit doing them up into whatever you want it to be, for me thats what its all about. This is not the main forum that i go on but the american guys on here convert to the 3sgte or 5sfte builds, its immense what people modify and that is half the joy.

Spending a few grand to make the celica into a flying machine is quite easy and not the hardest thing in the world, beats spending 50k on a new car which mostly all look the same these days.

a... what planet are you on? with some good struts the gtfour handles like its on rails, ive out classed multiple r34 gtr and r33 gtr on the ring and donington park and bedford
10 better fuel economy
a... what do you expect, a 2l with anywhere upto 280bhp out the factory? if you want economy or moan about fuel consumption, buy a ford fiesta
11) better idle characteristics
a... what are you on? mine idles smooth at 750rpm, if yours doesnt, its crap
12) shorter braking distances
a.... on drugs or something? the st205 has awesome brakes, good pads like carbotechs will stop you dead far quicker than any evo or poohbaru
13) significantly higher levels of overall reliability
a... its a toyota, ive owned it 4 years and have had only regular maintanence that i would do on any other car....
14) smoother ride quality with less vibration from engine and drive train.
a.. its a sports car, built for speed with a little comfort, you dont like, buy a boring car
15) better tires
a... its called a tyre shop
16) better visibility through xenon discharge technology (sometimes steerable and self leveling)
a... buy a hid kit, its not like they had those lights back then, look at the r32 and r33 liners, they are the same crap headlights
17) higher horse power outputs
a... it did, it was far more than the 240 quoted as proven by multiple dyno's
18) smoother power delivery usually through newer cam phasing technologies
a... what isnt smooth, i get very smooth power and usable boost of 1.2bar from 3600rpm
19) significantly better aesthetics
a.. you need to go to specsavers, the st205 is a fantastic looking car and doesnt look a day old.

And if there is one thing the 3S excels at it is taking mods and turning them into REAL gains.
Again - perhaps this is not the car for you?

Right now Toyota has left F-1 Racing, has left Rallying and has entered the hybrid wars (OH EM GEEE DRAMAA SUSPENSEEs!)...I'm pretty sure in a few years time maybe a decade who knows...They'll pull a camaro..."hey dude remember that cool car we use to make...lets re launch it!" Hopefully it doesnt come out as a giant rolling turd.

I chose a celica because it looked Fking GREAT! got decent gas mileage and was cheap! then felt like I needed more thrill than the FWD 1zz could give me...So i traded a newer car for a goddamn gas guzzling oil consuming loud tire screeching low tech interior (to todays standards) non xenon headlamp GT4. And its Fcking Beautiful, I love loud engines, I love the exhaust screaming catless fireballs wtf not! I love seeing all the little arrow dials workin back and forth and the PSHIUUUUUUU from the BOV! And personally I dont care if subaru or bishi develop a 2015 car that fkin blows you while you drive it. Im GT4 for life, it had me when I turned the key

P.s. Im pretty sure Tufys GT4 blows most 2010 cars out of the water. It may be old tech but it sure as hell aint slow

I am completely happy with my 205. the feeling of gunning it around a corner, on ice, taking it sideways, letting off the gas to get it straight...It really is the most fun car i have yet to own!

wow sounds like someone is in love...but anywho, considering the OP, man its a car. There will always be something better, and you could own of the newer 2010/2011 model cars, and still be let down. Its all in what you make yo...and thankfully with our beloved hobby, it is just that..

If you want to know what the year 2010 means to me, or as it sits now, the year 2011, is that i have more stuff i can do to Modify my vehichle, make it faster for cheaper, and all around better than it was before...that isnt to say that everyone else out there with their cars CANT do the same...no it just means we can contine to spend our time and money (and other things like blood sweat, and a few relationships) with what makes us happy...

That isnt also to say that the GT4, the SS-1/2/3, arent great cars. They are. When alot of us on this site purchased them we bought them for what we saw and wanted in them...

Dont belive me...look at this thread...almost makes me cry..

Why, its because a man took a car that most of us would pass up, and put his blood sweat and tears into it to make it something that is his...Now, like all of us he has the option to go out and buy a newer car...Did he do it, no and he has his reasons why.

My point is, its all in what you make it man...i bought a GT4 here in japan, against all the other great cars out here..why??? because it had in it what i wanted...A cheap AWD turbocharged vehicle that i knew alot about, and was toyota...was all i needed..oh and it had to be somewhat strong and easy to repair..

And that thing can "best" the best cars out here that havent been fully rebuilt...

BTW< where ya at OP, you havent posted in a while, lol...
