The car is also likely to be marketed to older buyers than originally planned, too. The head of Toyota’s newly created sports vehicle department, Tetsuya Tada, told Autocar that his team had increased the target age group by 10 years, from the 30s to 40s, after market research revealed that fewer younger buyers would opt for the sleek coupé than first thought.

Then why is it that this situation is allllllll to possible.

OH I'LL TELL YOU WHY, because damn 'Yota believes to market their damn vehicles towards people who just want to get from point A to point B in the cheapest way possible, instead of marketing toward people who want the funnest experience for their money to from A to B. DAMN YOU TOYOTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... no but actually I agree with you.

so they are aiming it at mid life crisis folk? why would a 30 year not buy a sports car if they wanted one? sounds like a load of BS to, maybe they just say things like this to get people talking about the car again and drum up even more interest when talk of it quietens down a bit, wonder if there is a thread on an official Toyota forum atm about the FT-86 with people in their 30's going ape at them for even suggesting they wouldn't be interested in a sports car

i dont think its Toyota that wants to be talked about, its just Autocar.co.uk . Theyre not the first and not the last ones to publish an article with BS just to get backlinks from all over the world. FT-86 is a hot and mysterious topic right now and people can say whatever they like and still they gain publicity. Be ready for articles like these for the next 20 months..
im not saying its 100% lies, im saying that I absolutely dont trust this stuff at all

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what competition this car has? I am trying to think of some but all I can think about is v6's (and quite possibly the RX-7).

I am just curious if this car has any real competition aside from the 216a coming from Subie, which of course is the same car.

It doesn't, technically, which is why I'm so excited for it. There are plenty of FR coupes out there, but there are no FMR coupes (to my knowledge), so Toyota would basically be creating a niche...an MX-5 in coupe form, from Toyota...a Toyota that will hopefully be called Celica.

Solstice coupe, V6 Mustang/Camaro/Challenger. Even though it's a 'vert, I'm sure the MX5 is considered competition for the FT-86.

Or if it does become the new Solara, then I guess the Accord coupe is competition.

The competitions for this car is going to be based solely on the price range, and not based on front engine rear wheel drive plate form.

For instance would you rather have a (used) track edition of the 370z with brembo brake package for the same price as an entry level ft86? What ever toyota sets the price and trim levels for the ft86 would determine its competition.

If they set the price to high it will be competition against well equipped v6 camaro and mustangs. If they set the fully equipped model price even higher it will be fighting for the same markets as 370z and wrx sti / lancers evo. If they price it lower it will be in the same market as a well equiped honda civic Si and mazda3 even though these cars are fwd.

It really boils down to the idea " for the same money would you rather buy a Car A over Car B." Until we know the exact price and performance sheet its hard to tell if this car is worth all the hype.

that makes sense hanyo, and speaking of which, when they set the price im wondering what payments are going to be like (im sure rediculous) i was talking with my boss the other day about buying a new car. he told me his rule of thumb was to add 200 dollars for every 10k the car cost. So if a car is 30k youre looking at a $600 per month payment, i said what about credit and down payment? he said it dosent matter nowadays... kinda put a dampening on my plans for it (or any new car for that matter)
ive always saved and bought a used car never liked the payment thing, but was willing to do it for an ft!

back on topic though: i agree with hanyo, im thinking the turbo edition will be priced to compete with the 370z and evo's and sti's.

it should not be too bad. just like any other car loan. The larger the down payment and the longer the term the lower the monthly payment will be. For example: lets say the car is $26k out the door. For your average 5 year loan without a down payment would be around 550 bucks a month. Lets say you put down $10k at the time of purchase your monthly payment is gonna be $340. You can also get loans from different banks and longer car loan time which can affect your monthly payment. If you want to play around with numbers you can go to this website : Car loan calculator

I'm just waiting on Toyota to release the specs sheet to see if this car is worth all the fuss.
