i have a 97 with the 4 speaker system and i want to replace the door speakers with some 8" subs, but i dont wanna buy any then find out they won't fit..... what's the max depth?? do i need free air subs??

rockford fosgate 8in punch subs are what i have. there nice and flat

i used to have that, i switched to JBL 6.5's to get more clarity.

yeah id really recoment using a set of high quailty 6 or 6.5'' component speaker. (woofer and tweeter seperate) they will give better clarity. dynomatt ur door to seal it up that way the entire inside will act as a box for the woofer..



use the stocking speaker mountings but modify them to take a bigger speaker.

i got some kicker midsubs lying around in good condition. I could sell it to you, pm me.

Great set up for the doors for sure.
I dont recommend subwoofers in the front doors, they are going to drive you crazy with THAT much bass up front you wont hear
much else of your music. Midwoofers are the way to go. The 8" Kicker Midwoofers or the JL Audio 8" ZR Midwoofers are definitely the way to go.

I have a 3-way component Hertz setup. 0,8 inch tweeter, 3 inch midrange, 8 inch kickwoofer and 3-way passive crossover. It sounds really great, even if my doors are not sealed yet.
I had a little trouble installing the 8 inch kickwoofers, I had to cut the plastic to make room for a larger magnet and also add a 5 mm thick MDF ring, but it was a 2-hour operation and it wasn't that difficult.
I don't recommend installing subwoofers inside the doors unless you only need SPL; it would be like having only a subwoofer in the trunk and 2 tweeters in the front, there will be no voice in your music. You need a little kickbass and midtones to call it "music".

8 inch kickwoofers are also available from Ground Zero, DLS, Focal, Alpine etc. (I think Focal's are larger than 8 inch, I'm not sure...).

How does that setup sound? I was thinking along the lines of that or a 3 way speaker up front, subs in the back and new tweeters up front. The stock system realllly sux the only thing that has delayed me from throwin out my stock system is I leave my convertible top down a lot and now I will have to worry about someone stealing my unit or having to take off the face plate evvvvery time.

I had some JL 8w3's in my door and they added a real nice bass and great frontstage as well, only thing I didn't like about them was my doors would always rattle(but I have shaved door handles with solenoids in door and window control module in my door too-so that might have been it).

rattle went away if I upped the x-over point, but then whats the point of having subs in your doors right?????
So I ditched them.

I ended up doing some MB QUART Q-line 8" components bi-amped off of an old school PPI competition amp, crossed over at 75hz.
running 2- 15" Alpine R's tuned to 30hz on a ton of power is one of the best sounding setups I have.

I am about to take out 15's but no matter what I think I am keeping the 8" MB's bi-amped .

Also I think Hertz has an 8" component and for the price on most of the hertz line they are amazing.
I have heard baseline Hertz 6.5 components and they blow away Alpine's and even the JL ZR stuff!!!! so even if you do a 6.5 hertz sounds really full and has great bottom end, if you want something really BRIGHT with alot of tweeter go MB reference of Q-line

so what are the best 8 inch speakers or subs or midwoofers to put in the front?

It depends upon exactly what you're aiming to accomplish -- which is why there's such a variety of answers in this thread.

I run a set of Focal 210 CA1, which are actually two-ways with an integrated crossover. I've got them set up for full-range as I was looking for staging and adequate bottom end rather than blow the doors off bass. That said, whether it's a bass drum or a kettle drum, there's a good bit of thump available.
