no no no, not bigger turbo. Our engines do just perfect with smaller turbos; I know from when I had my celi turboed; great power band, could burn out shifting gears.

Looks great man, good work, you are going to love your car.

^haha

I'm not a dude, and the car has been turbo'd for about a year and a half now. I did all the research and calculations for my turbo, just didn't understand how the calculations and flow map plotting translated to how the car felt. My first post has the flow map for the turbo I have now and it looks good on the plot but it intersects the choke line which you can feel when driving it toward the higher rpms. I already know I need a bigger turbo, its really not up for debate anymore. And yes, I do love my car.

Did a compression test on my motor today, just out of curiosity. I haven't tested it since I replaced the piston so the very last compression test was when I found out I needed a piston last June, so even though the car has been running fine I was very nervous.

Results:
cyl #1 -- 195
cyl #2 -- 190
cyl #3 -- 195
cyl #4 -- 195

I am extremely happy with those results. Ready for bigger turbo! biggrin.gif

Hey stef, im new on this forum i have a 96 corolla station wagon which im currently collecting parts for a turbo set up. After reading your thread i decided i will get a aem fic just wondering do you have a diagram of how you hooked it up for the 7a, and how are the injectors working out? are you keeping those for the gt28?

I'm not Stef but she was the one that provided me the 7A-FE ECU diagram which I used when I installed my GReddy e-Manage Blue. There is no need for a diagram to hook up. It's too easy. Injector wires are only two IIRC, ignition wire I also think is two or three, and then you have the TPS wire. It's only a few wires. Too easy. If she can get the diagram to you, then you just look at the wires in the pinout and intercept them accordingly with the FIC wires. smile.gif

ok, the injectors are great. I originally had the 315cc supra lime green tops and they were just about too small. The 370's have plenty of room to grow so yes I will be keeping them with the GT28RS, I'm thinking they will be ok. I actually did get some 3SGE 372cc injectors I'd like to install eventually, just for a more OEM look.

here's the FIC wiring... this is from my notes that I used to install it, I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything while doing it. The FIC instructions are a little off with the crank signal wires, the way the instructions have you hook it up didn't work, the car wouldn't start. They may have edited it since then though. I did finally get some info from Jay in the UK (funkySR) who had the same issue.

There's two main plugs for the FIC, a 22 pin and a 24 pin. All the wires are labeled.
Some of the wires you need to interrupt, so cut the wire off the ecu and one side gets connected to one wire while the other side gets connected to a different one off the FIC. I'm not sure if all the colors will be the same for a Corolla, even obd1 has some different wire colors.
E5 off the 7A ECU is the 26 pin connector
E6 is the 16 pin connector
E7 is the 22 pin connector

FIC PIN#------LABEL (COLOR)------ECU CONNECTOR-PIN#(COLOR)----ECU/SENSOR SIDE/TAP

FIC 22pin connector:
19 ----- CRK MAG I+ (G)-----E5-4 (O)-----SENSOR SIDE
21------ CRK MAG O+ (G)----E5-4 (O)-----ECU SIDE

8------- CRK MAG I- (G)------E5-17 (W)----TAP

16------ IGN POWER (RD)------E7-12 (BLK/R)---TAP

6------- TPS+ (W) ------------E6-11 (BLK/W)---TAP

4------- PWR GND (BLK)----- E5-13 (BRN)-----TAP
15------ PWR GND (BLK)---- E5-26 (BRN)-----TAP
5------- SIG GND (BLK)------ E6-16 (BRN)-----TAP

12---- INJ 2 IN (BLU)--------- E5-11 (BLK/R)----ECU SIDE
21---- INJ 2 OUT (BLU)------- E5-11 (BLK/R)----INJ SIDE

13-----O2 1+ (PNK)---------E6-6 (W)--------TAP
1------O2 2+ (PNK)---------E6-5 (W)--------TAP

(I know this one says MAF but you hook it up to the MAP sensor, IIRC its only for the map clamp feature so its optional, I didn't connect this part yet)
14-----MAF IN+ (BLU)-------E6-2 (BLU)------SENSOR SIDE
15-----MAF OUT+ (BLU)-----E6-2 (BLU)------ECU SIDE

lol Not yet, but it will happen... biggrin.gif

be patient, I'm trying to focus on the Beams, it still needs a lot of attention. My car is just fine and happy right now. I have the money for the turbo set aside, I'll probably buy it toward the end of the summer and work on getting all the extra lines and fittings I'll need that I don't have or that I want to re-do during the winter. Then the upgrade project will start next summer. That's the plan as it sits now.

I did get the flange, it does not fit perfect, there is a gap between where the flange sits on the housing, but thats ok. I thought it might be ok and Manny says it will be just fine and for some strange reason I trust what Manny tells me so...

I also took the exhaust housing off my turbo so Manny can ceramic coat it with my manifold.

I bought exhaust piping. 304 stainless 2 J-bends with 6"x12" legs and a 2" straight length just in case

Where did you get this flange. I'm looking for one and just can't find it.
Thanks

I couldn't find one either, so Randy (97lestyousay) actually custom machined one for me based on the dimensions of the turbo.

Been a few years since I been on this forum. Glad to see you are still at it and that your build was successful, are you still running a oem block?

yup, 100% stock bottom end, only upgrade to internals is the reground camshafts. I did break a piston but I replaced it with a new OEM piston, its been fine since.

Hi Stef, using the FIC, you said you are not clamping the 3S-GTE MAP sensor? i just turboed Erynns 7A-FE and exploring management. im not very happy with the FIC on my 5S-FTE. its fighting with the stock ECU too much. can you email me your MAP by chance? eodninja6@aol.com

thanks

Correct, I don't really have a need to use the map clamp right now. I'm only running 11psi directly off wastegate pressure only and its been running well like that for a long time now. Although, I guess you could try using the map clamp and setting it to clamp right when it goes into boost. Then, in theory, the stock ecu should receive a consistent signal from then on and maybe not fight the FIC as much.

As many of you know I'm going to turbo the 7A. wink.gif

So first things first, with the help of Garrett's Turbo Tech 103 (Expert), I did the compressor flow map calculations... try to follow along, if you have any questions just ask...

here are the EQUATIONS:

and the CALCULATIONS (for a 7AFE with a target of 200hp at the flywheel):

then you need to plot some numbers on the COMPRESSOR FLOW MAP of your choice
I got a small Garrett 2052 which should be enough for my goals

From just looking at different compressor flow maps you'll learn a lot. In general, the closer the turbine and exhaust housing sizes the wider your power range will be but the maximum boost level is limited. When the sizes are significantly different you'll notice the compressor map will look taller and thinner, that gives you a smaller RPM range you can boost in but you can achieve higher boost levels in that range.

What kind of engine internals are you runnig?
