Does anyone here have any experience with metal head gaskets on the 3SGTE? If so did you have both your block and head machined or just the head?

slight machining is required on both - block and head. its more like cleaning the surface.
more work on head is required when head is slightly warped. metal head gasket doesnt change anything in regard. its just a better head gasket -------------------- 1994 MR2 SW20, 1990 Celica ST185, both 3SGTE

If it's more like cleaning can it be done without removing the engine?

the stock gasket is a layered metal head gasket. are you talking about a copper gasket? if you use one then you have to have your head ringed, not worth it IMO. the TTE head gasket that you can get from ATS racing will support 600HP

No nothing fancy like O-ringed cylinders... just a plain MLS head gasket. Probably the TTE one from ATS as a matter of fact. I'll probably just shoot them an email and see what they recommend.

Cool. Did you have to have the block or head machined to a certain smoothness? I had read that it has to be exceptionally smooth for it to seal correctly.

Stock 3S Hgs are only metal from 3rd gen up. 1st and 2nd gen are really ****ty conventional gaskets Cool. Did you have to have the block or head machined to a certain smoothness? I had read that it has to be exceptionally smooth for it to seal correctly. You need to have the head machined for sure. The block just really depends on when was the last time it was done. I only did my head and I've got 27k miles and 18-20PSI regularly on it - daily driven BTW BTW - TTE is really just an HKS MHG This post has been edited by DEATH: Jul 29, 2010 - 3:01 PM -------------------- ENGINE: '93 RC 3S-GTE/WRC CT-20b [18-20PSI] PERF: TRD/HKS/ARP/NGK/MSD/ACT/Blitz/STRI/APEX'i/TwosRus/GReddy/Magnaflo/KOYO SUSP: Tein/Bilstein/SusTech/ INT: SS-III SEATS/Toyota Hyper Sports EXT: WRC/TRD/404 Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them.
