well, my 97' gt began giving me trouble today for the first time since i've had it. (nov2009)
my temp went up to three quarters on the way to school, i thought it might be cause i was low on coolant.
i came home after school, waited a little for my radiator to cool down, refilled the coolant.
then i go to drive to walmart, and my temp gauge started going up again.
later on at home i let it idle for a while... my temp started rising again and realized my fans weren't activating.
i checked the fan fuse, its good.
so i'm guessing its the fan relay sensor?
but i can't seem to find it, or any diagrams of where it might be.
any help please!
thanks in advance

it can't be the thermostat, because there is still flow of water
as i open my radiator and let my car idle, you can see the flow of water going.
if it was the thermostat, then there wouldn't be aflow?

anyone know the placement of the fan relay sensor? biggrin.gif

the thermostat can be bad and you can still have a flow of fluid.
It happened with my dad's Blazer. For some reason it never overheated, but there was still a flow of fluid.

Try checking the relay box, it's under the hood right behind the radiator on the right side. I'm not exactly sure if it's in there, but that would be my guess.

To answer you question- Fan1 is @ the main fuse panel by the driver side fender. Fan2 & fan3 is in a relay box behind your passenger side headlights.

To answer your problem- Listen to Dustin.

oo okay, i didn't know about the flow, but i now understand there can be a flow with a bad thermostat.
but do you guys still think its the thermostat when my fans don't activate at all?
i let my car idle, they don't activate
i drive it, my temp starts going up, and they still don't activate
ahhhh help! kindasad.gif

Yes his thermostat could be stuck. Worth replacing.

Now somebody explain to me how a stuck thermostat can cause his fan to stay off.

What he's asking for is the location of the temp switch/sensor that controls the fan relay.

Sorry, I don't know the location.

Sorry, I don't know the location.

it's in the fuse/relay box in the bay, as d-man already said.

to answer your question, the temp sensor for the guage cluster is on the water neck connected to the engine.
The temp sensor for the fans is on the bottom of the radiator.

now, if your thermostat is bad/stuck closed and not allowing cool water to circulate through the engine then the engine overheats and the guage tells you. When this happens the cool water is still in the radiator and the fan temp sensor (connected to the bottom of the radiator) does not tell the fans to kick on.

so again, change you thermostat, it's bad.

Wow, 2 water temp sensors! That certainly explains it.

Do they have a 3rd water temp sensor for the ECU? smile.gif

Yeah they do, it's actually internally liquid cooled! tongue.gif
