Hey guys, i just got my 97 back to my house and i'm ready to swap the engines, and i'm hoping i don't have near as hard as a time as i did pulling the 94's.. i was talking around to some of you on here and i heard the reason i was having such a hard time is because i didn't use a leveler. if someone could explain to me what a leveler does and how to use it, i would greatly appreciate it because i'm going to go out and pull the engine in the next hour so i can start the swap... thanks ahead of time guys!

normally you have just a chain attached to the two hooks on your engine from the engine hoist...this allows the engine to be lifted straight up. or crooked but not varied depending on where you hooked your chain with the hoist

In most vehicles the engine needs to be tilted one way or the other as you are lifting or reinstalling it in order to clear certain components and such. A leveller applies a movable fulcrum to your chain point allowing you to make one end longer or shorter making the engine tilt

like this

note you thread the thru bolt at the top and it changes the fulcrum from one end to the other, different brands and styles exist but they all work on the same principle.

16 chain links on the drivers side hook, 4-5 on the passanger side.
use a jack to lower the drivers side down, and it comes right out.
no need for the leveler.

no need to close it, its better to leave it open for future posters that are looking for the answer to the same question.
one thing i would say, tho, is maybe try to be more discriptive in your titles, so that people who search the site get more chances to get hits on theyre questions.
for instance, a good title for this thread might have been "question on using an engine leveler for removal" or somthing like that.
good luck! smile.gif

In an mr2, yes. But not in a celica IMO, unless it's AWD.
