Car - Toyota Celica 1997 ST. 7AFE.
I was driving at about 60 - 70 mph. I accidentaly shifted in to reverse while driving like 3 times while trying to change to 5th gear. Each shift lasted like 3 to 4 seconds in reverse at those speeds. I know I messed up. Did I damage the transmission? |

i did it made a grinding noise. That grinding noise is the gears bouncing against each other because they aren't threading. If you had actually gone into reverse on the highway, your transmission would've fallen off (not really, but it would've been effed up BAD) -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

Yeah If it was just a quick grind it should be fine, I did this whilst learning on another car years and years ago.
Just remember not to force the gears in and to just just guide them in, it will come after a while. |

5th gear is in the opposite direction... I'm floored that you not only though that reverse was 5th, but you attempted to jam it in a few times.

If reverse works at all you'll be okay for a while.
The Grinding noise was it TRYING to go into reverse, but it never happened. At 70 to reverse you would have destroyed your tranny. If it actualy by some mircle held up, you would have fliped. So unless you have a tranny made of magic metal, then you've probably grinded the crap outta reverse. You can have this serviced at your local tranny shop. You'll probably want to have the R gear replaced all together. Or Junkyard you a new one. I do not doubt it will go out much sooner because of this, Depending on how much it slips ATM is a good gauge of how much life is left on it before you have to push it out of parking spaces -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! Back on topic. OP, if reverse still works, you're golden. As stated above, the grinding noise is one gear bouncing off of another. If you had actually managed to get the car into reverse, then either the reverse gear would be destroyed or else your wheels would have locked up. The teeth on the gear itself are likely affected. Do that enough and you won't have a gear anymore. But if it still works for now, then lesson learned, and you should be fine. There's no way you ''shifted'' in reverse. You'd need both your arms pulling full strengh to do it.
It probably only grinded. It happens to me sometimes when my hand slips off the shift knob after releasing the clutch. Though, it has never happened to me in reverse. |

always, always, alwaysalwaysalways: study the shift pattern on any manual transmission car you are unfamiliar with driving BEFORE you even start the engine.

i didnt shift into reverse but i had a 280zx tranny lock up on me at 50 mph lucky for me i was on an empty road and just slid sideways completely uncontrollably thru 4 lanes for a bit before coming to a halt in the fursthest right oncoming lane and having no gears and calling a tow truck... if it had been a busy road when it happened i might not be here to tell you all the story. had you actually gotten into reverse that is what would of happened.
